I'm going to buy my dad a new camera to replace his very aged Nikon that he's got at the moment. I've got a Canon S100 that's great so I've naturally looked to the latest model in the range the S120 but is there anything else out there that's better/worth looking for?

It doesn't need to be anything overly fancy, it's going to be on automatic all the time, needs an integrated flash and be a compact, he's not interested in interchangeable lenses etc, it's just for the occasional snap. He's 72 and doesn't use a computer etc, it will be me who's taking the images off for him and 'Developing' them for him.

I've been out of the camera market for a while so I'm not sure what's the camera of choice at the moment in this sector.

Sony RX100 (mk 1, 2 or 3). Best compact out there. The mk one is a snip at £300ish

It's a bit bigger than the Canon - but the images are much better (I came from Canon)

Canon have just launched an RX100 competitor - the G7X. Panasonic have also launched a new LX100 which is slightly larger but even better. Any of those three will be very good choices.

Should point out relative prices between Mk1 RX100 and the other two mind. (£300, £550, £650)

That is a fair point!

Cheers guys, the Mk1 RX100 looks like the one, even though it's not the latest it will be a massive improvement on what he's got, which is a Nikon Coolpix P5000 http://www.dpreview.com/reviews/nikonp5000

My Canon S100 failed to to the well known (once you do a search for it) lens error. I spent several weeks looking at alternatives on the web, in the shops, and on PH before deciding that the RX100 MK1 offered the best price/quality compromise, and I've been very pleased with it. The image quality is far better, and the battery life is vastly superior, and it's a well made bit of kit.

Sony are currently offering a cash-back offer which makes it even more appealing - just remember to submit your claim online after your purchase because it's not done automatically!

There is another thread running on here for anyone considering buying a Sony RX100 which is well worth a read: http://www.pistonheads.com/gassing/topic.asp?h=0&a...

The Sony RX100 can be set in full auto mode as with the Canon S100. It really is a very well designed compact camera. I have no regrets in purchasing it except for the fact that I paid £349 just days before the cash-back offer was unveiled. John Lewis offer a 3 year warranty including accidental damage for an additional £30.

Thanks Rich, Canon will still repair the S100 for free under warranty for the lens issue. Mine failed in April and they turned it around within two weeks. I hope you didn't throw it away!

You were lucky, I returned my S100 to John Lewis who sent the camera away to Cannon for repair. They also lent me a Sony RX50 in the meantime which was OK, though must comment that the RX50 was far more bulky and the image quality wasn't as good as the S100, it was certainly better than nothing. After seven weeks of waiting around I contacted JL who came back with the reply that there was no ETA from Cannon for the repair. Needless to say I was extremely annoyed about this.

Eventually JL refunded the purchase cost. In view of this goodwill gesture I purchased an alternative camera from them, namely the Sony RX100, and also purchased their 3 year warranty and accidental damage plan.

I find the RX100 to be marginally bigger than the S100, but the image quality is far better as is the video recording, and the battery life is in a different league. The build quality is also superior. I purchased a fast 32GB SD card from PC World which provides ample storage for photographs and video recording.

Exactly the same for our one.
