Hello chaps, been a long time since I posted anything here but I've been lurking smile

I've had my D200 for over 10 years now and it's time for a change so I'm part exchanging some lenses and the body with MPB photographic in exchange for a used body and maybe £25 of real moneys.

My main reasons for changing are that I just can't get on with the low light performance with the D200 and I understand these Nikon bodies have really moved the game on in that area, plus I want something full frame to better suit my remaining lenses.

So the question is, do I go D800 to retain familiarity with the controls and the size of the thing, or do I go D610 for something a bit more modern?

Anyone made a similar choice and have any advice for me?

Is the D750 a possibility?

Better AF than the D610 but quicker, better low-light and without the huge file sizes of the D800?

Too much money I'm afraid... A more likely possibility is the D700, which I've been seriously considering, but would result in money coming back to me which the wife would nab and use to buy things like holidays and baby products.

How much more modern is a D610 than a D800?

If you want FF I'd say the D800 or 810 is the one to have. And you get the 'pro' round VF to remind you of your good fortune...

Good luck getting to grips with your 'new' focal lengths wink

Thanks Simpo, I've been leaning towards the D800 to be honest.

The new focal lengths will be a blessing (I hope). My most used lens is a 28-70 f/2.8 which has never felt wide enough on a crop factor body, so FF should make it pretty much perfect. My 10-20 won't change too much as it's a DX format lens anyway so I'll be having to crop heavily.

I also know what photo you're going to post!

Dobbo - even in DX mode the D800 still gives you (I think) 11Mp, plenty for most purposes. So you have FX and DX in one, hurrah!

I have a D600 which I bought in preference to the D800 purely based on wanting something a little smaller and something the wife could pick up and use (I realise many perceive this as a strong disadvantage). If the D750 had been around at the time, I guess I'd have gone for that though the D600 was a chunk cheaper so maybe not.

Anyway what I was going to say was, much as I love my D600, I'm not sure that the D600/610 offer anything at all over the D800 other than being smaller/lighter and possibly being a little cheaper. If those aren't considerations, I'd go for the D800, no question.

I find the D800 exactly fine for my needs, but I think it is best in a situation where you have time and control. It goes without saying that better lenses and technique will reward and as a step on from a D200, effective focal length aside, it'd be a "doddle".

In fact I'd say it's hard to beat, and there's little that's actually much more modern at the moment unless you're waiting for a D5s....

Rob your right about the D200, much as I loved mine it was awful above ISO 800, I got the D600 with the Nikkor 24-70 f2.8, Nikkor 28-300 f3.5 - 5.6 as a walkabout and the Nikkor 300 f4, I could not justify the D800 and have the optimum glass. The D600 has just been replaced by the D610 thanks to Nikon but I have to admit the D750 is a very tempting prospect but, strangely, I find the D610 is a superb camera even though it's not much different to the D600.

Good luck with your choice of the D800 it is a brilliant camera.

I personally dont think the d800 is the best for astro, but its still a decent performer at higehr ISO.

The d810 is much improved, as per Marc Adamus's latest on 500px

Used D700 and some FX primes. I'd suggest the 35mm f/2 AF-D and the 85 mm f/1.8 AF-D. Hell, even the 50mm f/1.8 AF-D is only £64 at MBP.

Then maybe you'll still have enough left for the quite superb 80-200mm f/2.8 AF-D (two touch at around £450.00)

I love lenses I do.

The only reason I'd consider moving up to another body would be for the improved high ISO performance that the D750 offers over the D700.

Good shout on the glass but whilst the D700 was strong in its day, it's looking tired against newer bodies. I was pixel peeping shots from a SonyA7s over the weekend- ISO16,000 looks as clean as ISO2,000 on the Nikon.

D800 is a generation newer and sounds like a fair choice for the OP's requirements.

I wonder if 'ISO' has become the new 'Megapixels'?

The latter race seems to have stopped but do we really need ISO 64,000+ in real life?

Suddenly the Rhod Gilbert sketch about the 1,000,000 candlepower torch comes to mind!

Low light performance was my number one priority, checking out places like DXOMark tells me the D800 is about as good as you can get within my budget, all the reviews seem to back this up.

Simpo - I'd say low noise at high ISO is way, way more important than the number of megapixels, I can see why it's become an obsession for some. The type of photo I take has changed dramatically (subject wise) and when I was reaching for my phone before my D200 (Lumia 1020, simply amazing camera), I knew it was time for a change!

D700 with fast primes seems a nice idea but honestly the 28-70 f/2.8 is such a fabulous lens, it's hard to justify filling the bag with primes that are already covered by the more versatile lens that cost well over £1k new.
