hi chaps in August this year i treated myself to a Canon 700D off Amazon, just recently i noticed the serial number sticker was wearing off the bottom of the camera body so much so that the serial number is no longer visible so i checked with a couple of friends who have the same camera body and the sticker on theirs is still visible even though they use it as much as me and have had theirs a lot longer....so this got me wondering.
Fortunately i took a photo of the sticker before it had worn away.

Tonight i checked the EXIF data on a photo and the serial number on the EXIF data is completely different to the sticker on the box the camera came in and sticker on camera body......have i bought a dodgy one?

Box and camera body serials are the same, EXIF is different.

Who was the seller on Amazon? I have heard of this happening with one of the HK grey importers in the past, it was a refurbed camera with a different serial number sticker to avoid it showing up as a refurb.

First hit on Google for "rumsby electronics grey import" is a chap who ended up with a grey import canon lens from them, whilst it's the Internet so you need to take everything with a pinch of salt he doesn't seem to have had a pleasant experience with them.

Geezus! Thanks for that..i just hope Amazon are helpful.
It's like paying for a new car to find it's actually second hand and had a decent valet.

Not really, it's still new, it was just supposed to be sent to a different country. A grey import is the same as any other colour import, but you can hit warranty issues later because makers are bit silly like that.

Canon are a bit strange, lenses are worldwide warranty, it matters not where you buy them. Bodies are country specific.

I think your first step should be to speak to canon. As the difference between exif and labels sounds more than just a grey import issue. Once you have information from them go to Amazon.

Amazon and Canon are both investigating.
Amazon say I'll get a refund if it wasn't sold as it was supposed to
'Brand new with manufacturers 12 month warranty ' (if it's a grey import then it's not covered by UK Warranty)

But it might still have a 12 month warranty. I always buy grey imports as they're cheaper and know that I'll have to send it to the retailer who'll have to send it off to Asia to be repaired.

Still has a warranty, just not a uk one.

Is there much difference as long as you're protected?

Except you know your buying a grey import the poster didn't.

correct.
Amazon have rejected my claim as it's outside 30 days (bought it in July)
So lets hope it's reliable enough to last me a long time as I really don't want to be without it if it needs to go to Burton on trent and then Asia

It might be worth posting something over in SP&L - if goods have been misrepresented, I wonder if Amazon can legally apply a 30 day limit for you to identify this fact and thus absolve themselves of any responsibility if you don't.

How did you pay? If by credit card, might be worth speaking to your card company also, they have people that can assist with this type of issue.

Have a chat to trading standards my late starts this week have taught me that Amazon should be cracking down on rogue traders like this as it is their responsibility.
