Obviously being a photo forum I guess many of you do, but personally I am rubbish at getting photos printed. I just read something shared on facebook (link at the bottom if you're interested) and it got me thinking that I really need to get into the habit of getting photos printed, especially just the random snaps of my family, holidays, etc. We sometimes go through the photos on the laptop and it's nice, but it doesn't match the experience of physically holding and going through those images.

I've used photobox in the past and they've been pretty good, but are there any recommendations for good printing services and good ways of storing/displaying photos? e.g. good albums, canvases. Is there anything I can do to make the process a bit easier so it does become habit or is it worth making the time to select, correct and print the photos? I'm interested to know what other people do really.

I found an old photo album recently that was not even half full & started printing photos to fill it up, tired of that quite quickly & none of the four of us has picked it up since anyway.

We used to have a 24" monitor on a wall in the kitchen, had a photo album set up & have that running whenever we were in there which was nicer.

I did one of those as a present for my Dad a few years ago. It was excellent quality, but took a long time to put together. Have you made many? Is it a quicker process after you've done a few?

Done lots, as I also sell them. It does get quicker.

With all the recent gloom and doom stories about the potential,of losing access to our collections, added to by the demise of two pcs recently, I'm interested in trying this.

So, could I ask you what paper type you'd recommend, given your experience of using them? Thanks...

The standard paper is pretty good tbh. Unless you print a magazine, then you really need the premium paper. If I were you I'd do a tester 20 page small square - won't cost much and you can judge quality. Lookout for codes - they make it much cheaper.

ETA The magazines are really good quality (as long as you go for the better paper). Here's one I just did:

Thanks. I'm going to do a tester, and a way for me to see 20 of my favourite pics. I don't know if it's my iPad lacking Flash or some such, but I can't open the link to your magazine. A shame... I'd like to see it!

I dont, but like you feel that i should.

I am doiing a 365 on film this year. I have an old pentax ME super i bought for £5 with a 50mm f/1.7 and 24mm f/2 lens, and i am taking one click of the shutter each day. Wanted to do a 365 but i don't have the time to spend hours editing the 30-40 shots per day i took last time i did a 365. This way there is no editing AND i am forced to print the whole lot out at the end of the year if i want to see them!

I am really looking forward to getting all the film developed at the end of the year!

hehe It will need 11 roles of film, which are about £8.50 per roll to develop, so not too bad...

I was the manager of a lab for 4+ years so i am hoping for some mates rates too wink

GetCarter, that magazine is stunning! inspirational stuff!

I brought a reasonably large digital photo frame thinking that'd be a good compromise but it sits on the side unused mostly. I stick them on the laptop and have them cycling on the screensaver.

Blurb looks nice, might have to start playing with that, few books under the coffee table would be quite a good way of doing it.

i printed some of mine last year. this picture of them shows the idea 18x12's from memory.

and my granddad asked for a couple i took in b&w to be done and went for 16x12's iirc.

the bottom one is now mounted in a picture frame and on the wall in their living room. Really proud of that when i saw it framed etc, i didnt even think it was mine lol.

been meaning to print some more from the supercar day last October but havent got round to it yet :/

Cheers - looks very nice. And purchased!

I'd never have thought of a magazine, as I always think of them as longer term, multiples with the one title.

Certainly something I'm now interested in either for photographs or my paintings, maybe to tout to galleries, shops etc.

Do you find it financially worthwhile, given their charges, or is it seen as a loss leader?

I kinda bulk buy when there Is a 30% off. I give the mags away, the books I make a few quid on. it's the DVDs that make me most cash, as they cost less than £2 a pop and sell for £11.95

I do a mix of digital and paper, obviously a lot go to Flickr/Facebook/my website, but some also go to a digital photoframe and the screen saver on my Apple TV. After a big holiday I'll do a photobook and have got prints dotted around the house, I have a set of Ikea Ribba frames and I change the prints in them as I have something new to display.

I usually get saller prints done at DSCL.

Apart from the stunningly good photos, those Blurb magazines look incredibly good value (118gsm) for one-off or small runs!
