Picasa - or something else?

I currently use Picasa to store my digital photos, which are best described as "snaps", compared to some of the shots on here!

However, I'm either being extremely stupid, and can't see a way to store them permanently (notwithstanding the potential for DVDs to fail) on DVDs or other media.

If Picasa doesn't have this facility, can you lot recommend another digital album that does - preferably free, as they really are just snaps.
