Iv'e been busy with other things lately but this weekend i have off and so have the kids.
Took them to the park and hired a bike.
this is my eldest:

I had to bracket the shots but this one came out quite well i thought
How does one meter when taking shots like this?, is it possible to meter first then pan with shutter release still half depressed?
I used a relatively slow shutter speed of 1/60th, the bike was only doing about 5 mph.

Try metering then sticking it in 'Manual' mode.

Martin.

I can see it Martin and evidentally so can Mungo
erm:scratchin:, don't know what to suggest.
I was in Shutter priority mode, do you mean M where you have controll of both?, Also how do you meter and retain the settings? I'm thinking memory. Although there is a star button which i think will go to spot metering.
Been reading about metering for mid tones so i focused on jason's face and pressed the star button for AE lock then tryed focusing when he was near and fired just as he passed.
I havn't been doing as much as i should lately but i think it's comming together all be it very slowly. There is still soooo much ( even basics ) that i don't understand that each time i get something right it highlights how far you are from being Fluent/conversant/good?

oddly (seems to be with imagebase links) if you quote bilko's first post, find the url and paste it into a new browser window you can see it and if you go back to this thread you will see the image in bilko's post.

Sigh, another dSLR user then.

Good pic btw, only thing to improve it to my mind would have been to pull back a little to get the whole bike in as well

Thanks
I am sure you could pan with a non slr, compact or other.
Your'e right about the comp, I started in wide on the fun up and messed things up trying to zoom in whilst he was travelling.

oh you can

It's just that it is much more difficult, as with the compacts viewfinder cuts off one side making images badly cropped/out of line

Yes, that'swhat I meant. Just do what you did before, except when you have exposure lock read what the full values are, in this case 1/60th @ f20, then go to manual and set the apature and f-stop value manually. Then you can fire away without having to worry about exposure as long as the weather doesn't change or you change the direction you are shooting in (in relation to the sun).

That'll be as clear as mud now then!

Martin.

there's the *guide rule* that says anything moving should be going into the frame, not out of it .. but i disagree .. i think the kart thing going out of the frame to the right suggests it's going even faster than it really is .. too fast to capture!! lol .. has a great sense of *fun* in the pic .. nice
