Really simple question here but I can't find the answer anywhere else.

If I buy something like this to record audio, can I synchronize it with separately shot video?

We would like to leave the recording device recording audio all day. And to shoot video sporadically throughout the day. It would be difficult to line up that video with the separate single long audio recording no? I see that "BWF" supports timestamps but do these only occur at the beginning of the file? Is BWF clever enough to autoalign the video with the audio, even with files that are not shot sequentially in one long run?

If someone here knows, I'd appreciate it.

It can be done - search for pluraleyes - its a neat plugin for editing apps, that syncs according to sound - but your camera will need to of recorded sound that is very similar to the recording device, for it to work. Adobe's premiere has a similar feature built in. The software looks for similarities in the audio waveform, and syncs using that. It can be a bit hit or miss though. You've really got to make sure the camera(s) are getting very similar audio to the audio recorder.

Sadly only the more expensive, bigger audio recorders have a proper timecode function.

Are you using video cameras that have timecode? You could set them to free running timecode and use that - so at the beginning of the day, get all your equipment together, set cameras to start at 00:00:00, and hit record on the audio device, at the same time. Free run time code runs even when camera isn't recording, so it'll go up at the same rate as the record time of the audio file. So you'll then have a very rough sync between the cameras timecode, and the duration of the audio file on the recorder. It'll be a few frames out, and will drift slowly out of sync throughout the day, but might get you close enough.

What kind of project are you working on?

Thanks hugely Fordo. Really useful.

First thought is that this won't quite work, then.

One camera will be on a drone which just picks up drone noise so the software isn't going to work too well there.

I like the proper timecode function but the GoPro camera will not be able to run all day (due to the drone mount).

Project involves hypercars - do please PM me if you want to know more as I'd be interested to tell you about it. But it's not really to be discussed here :/

What he said, but I have the exact model you mention and they are really good (unless it's windy - even the baffle/beaver won't stop the noise).

I often 'manually' link music with vid from a gopro. It's possible (with a decent start point) in the gopro software..

ETA ...all day would be a right kerfuffle mind.

What would concern me is not the synching up at the start - you can clap your hands for that - but whether they would stay in synchrony.
