Hi Everyone,
I just wondered if someone might be able to help me? i got a Lite-on LVW5005 DVD Recorder for christmas, which ive had to return because of many faults, including skipping of recorded programmes, and very weird colour tones.

As ive returned it i need another one to replace it, ideally with DV in so that i can transfer my video from my dv camcorder to DVD. id also like one with a stereo tuner so the sound quality of recordings isnt really poor.

I have between £120 and £200 for a new dvd recorder.

Any recommendations and thoughts very welcome!

Thanks in advance,
Oliver

Assuming you are looking for a seperate, which is the most elegant solution, have a look at this:

Little bit over your budget, but won the Which report for best DVD recorder without a built-in hard drive is the JVC DRM-10 - £201 from Comet online.

I bought one just before XMas and it is outstanding - the quality is superb, even on 4-hours setting, but it has a fully variable bit rate, so you can say you want to fit 195 mins on a DVD and it will get the best quality possible. Records onto and plays just about anything - simple to use and the DVin is fantastic - I have just finished dubbing all of my MiniDVs from my Sony Camcorder - you actually control the camcorder from the JVC remote.

The 55 tied with the JVC in the Which test, but doesn't have DV capabilities, which ruled it out for me.

Thanks for all the help! the JVC is certainly top of my list at the moment, it looks like there are some pretty good deals on it at the moment too, so i will go and have a look around a few shops over the weekend and have a play with a few of them and see which one fits what im after best.

I went into my local specialists yesterday and had a look at the Panasonic E55. it looks really good, but just lacked the DV in port for me really.

Im also looking at a couple of LG units -
the DR4810 - www.askdirect.co.uk/uview?call=ask.productSearch&id=4134&topcatid=14

and the DR4912 - www.askdirect.co.uk/uview?call=ask.productSearch&id=4657&topcatid=14

i already have a stack of DVD-R, -RW, and a couple of DVD+R's so if i can use these too, it would be very handy. Ideally im after a seperate, and im going to have it running along side my cyberhome multi-region dvd player.

I bought a stand alone Sony job for £360 a few weeks back... bloody thing only likes Sony blank DVD's. Typical. They don't tell you that in the book.

Some recorders will care whether it's a DVD+R or a DVD-R or a DVD+R9 etc etc - so make sure whatever DVDs you are putting in are compatible!

Ta Dobbo - been there - only Sony seems to work in my 'replacement' machine (told you I was sad).

In the JVC, I record onto "LeadData" DVD-Rs that I get for about 16p each from www.valuemedia.co.uk

At that price, they are disposable...

I've been considering one of these, as our video recorder's making funny noises at the moment and the remote's not working too good either

The JVC DR-M10 looks like the best one in this price range and is the one I'll probably go for but, I have a couple of questions:

1) What's the lifespan for DVD-RAM/RW/W etc discs?
2) Can the JVC connect to my Sky box (not Sky+) and get schedule info so I can just select a program and it'll record it or do you have to set start/stop times like a VCR?

cheers

Which reminds me. I bought the first CD writer (mid/late 1980's) and the blank CD's were £30 each!

Earned me a fortume mind, as I was the only git in town presenting demos on CD ...people are so easily 'bought'

It's also got prog. scan output for when you save up & treat yourself to a DLP projector (which I did last year!) MUCH better picture than interlaced.

1 - Dunno
2 - No, nothing can apart from Sky+ itself really, however t does come with an IR emitter on a wire that you put in front of the sky box and it transmits codes at the right time to switch to the right channel for recording. I have Sky+ and use the recorder for recording stuff off Sky+ that I want to keep and dubbing down DV movies for backup.

Has anyone tried playing recorded discs from the players on other normal dvd players? if so do they play normally like any other dvd? as this was one issue that worries me that i had with the dvd recorder i had at christmas, although it also had issues with pausing, stopping, jerking, and jumping even when playing the discs on itself!

oh and to answer one of the questions - when i was in my local independant shop they said that dvd-ram/r/rw discs should last for about 100,000 recordings, with a dvd±rw at least (im not sure about dvd-ram discs, also remember dvd-r discs are write once, read many times). providing you dont damage them they should play millions of times!

Cheers for the replies

I've just ordered a JVC DR-M10 but have a final question. Does it take type 1 or type 2 DVD-RAM discs? Can't seem to find out anywhere! Both types come in a cartridge, but you can remove the disc from type 2.
