Just bought a baby Canon DSLR and im having loads of fun with my new camera (nobody warned me that photography was more addictive than crack)

Anyways, here's some first attempts at shooting and editing. All criticisms welcome; there's some great photographers here and I'm really keen to learn more!

  • but first I must learn how to post the damn things...

Methinks you need to work on the posting bit.

PIcs look good though.

Many people are on flickr here... if you reply to them, you'll see the formatting that will work

Very nice mate, looks like you're progressing very well. I've followed you on flickr. From the ones you've posted, I particularly like mistywater and seastuff1.

The bridge shot has a lot of potential, but you've focused on the rocks(foreground), leaving the bridge very OOF. You could have improved this by changing your f stop to f8-13ish. This increases the focus area.

Would also be good if you could share larger thumbnails from flickr smile

Looks good to me smile resize the bbc code on flickr to get larger images on here. 800x566 is ok.

As you're new I'll let you off with a warning this time, please ensure you purchase a permit in future!readit

Fixed your posting issues matey. Just need to select the larger size when you choose to share on Flickr

Great pics one and all.

A fair bit of potential there smile though I would adjust the settings slightly depending what you want to do?

Ok, this is meant to be in a nice way, if you were asked to be self critical of your photo's, what would you pick up about them?
I am asking this because if you know what is wrong then you can improve on it, some of it is just tecnique and that comes with practice, I do it myself and usually get it wrong to start with, then play with the settings until I get the picture I am happy with smile

Also, shooting in full manual, auto, shutter or appature priority??

Cheers all!

If I was to pick fault... well, I really don't know! Maybe the colours are a bit garish and, as mentioned above, the focus on the bridge is well off - I'm going to fiddle with the ap in future because that's something I just cant seem to get right!

Honestly - if you see something amiss please say. Don't be shy. I've got thick skin : )

Shooting in full manual for all (except with auto-focus on. Does that count? Not sure... )

Its just practice, and remembering that the lower the appature number, the larger the appature, more light goes in, which means to compensate you need to shoot with a higher (faster) shutter speed.
This normally means your depth of field is closer and the background blurs away.

(example, F1.8 is a large appature and lets in lots of light, F22 is a small hole and lets in much less)

For your bridge shot, long exposure but a large appature, you could go for a higher F (say between F8 to 11) and get a sharper all round picture.
Also remember that the bridge is a HUGE feature, we can see you want to get the beautiful effect of the water but that bridge sticks out like a sore thumb, you have the eye for the picture, just learning to get the picture correct is the hard bit.

The gun enplacement, again you have the eye but have gone for a small appature instead of going for a larger appature because all you have in the background is a ship and its miles away, you can blur that out with depth of field by shooting a much lower appature like f3.5, but if you do that you have to shoot a faster shutter speed to compensate for the light coming in, again its just practice smile

The lighthouse, fantastic picture, again you have the eye but not the experience.
You have the causeway and the sea in the background but both are what I would call flat, the lighthouse on the end sticks up so I would have made that my focal point and shot the picture around F8.
Did you notice the cobbles are very white?
Basically you have too much light coming in and too slow a shutter speed, changing that to something like F8 and a slower shutter speed will bring out the detail of the lighthouse and cobbles much better smile

These guys will give you better tips than me, im average at best, if you can get back to those locations I think you will get the pictures you want biggrin

Great stuff! Thanks : )

It's the details like that I'll never pickup myself - call me easily pleased (and a bit lazy ; )

I look forward to getting back out there and getting better!

A very good start. Just need to look more closely at exposure (some are a little under and/or need the midtones lightening) and white balance (the bottom one is very blue). The winner of course is the top cat photo.

I'm not a fan of fake vignettes but it's a personal taste thing.

Final bit of advice - the hole in the lens is the APERTURE not the 'appature' smile

Don't want to dig! I'm liking them.

I keep coming back to that Top Cat at the top too (you should post that in the "Fantastic Moments" thread - I think Blib would love that!)

And don't listen to Simpo about Vinnie... Vino... Vignie... ... darkening the corners! It's a good technique if you can compose without distracting highlights out at the corners and I happen to like vignette as a substitute - but it doesn't please everyone.

Learning about colour management can be a fun challenge. And I'd have a different balance on that last one, but that also is personal preference - and sometimes (especially sunrise/sunset) what is "correct" is not what you want to show.

'Distracting highlights out at the corners'? I think my learned friend is on absinthe tonight! One spends millions of pounds on a state-of-the-art digital camera/lens combo that doesn't vignette, then splosh some vignette-effect sauce on top!

Colour management to me is about profiling and sRGB and Adobe1998 and all sorts of other stuff that I admit I don't fully understand. But white balance is easy - anything white in real life should either be white in the photos (ie 255:255:255) or a neutral grey tint thereof. But I'd add that sometimes technical accuracy is not visually right, and the best answer is, or should be IMHO, the one that *looks* right.
