Results seem very interesting indeed - the cameras were tested with the respective 85mm 1.4 lenses at f5.6, the Canon 85mm seems to have a lot more red lateral Cromatic Abberation showing up than the Nikon, and can't resolve the 50lpm converging lines, maybe its not quite up to the 50mpix spec of the sensor and you would see better results with a better lens. As it is the 50Mpix of the Canon doesn't seem to be resolving much more detail than the Nikon.

The high ISO results I think are better than anyone was expecting. Certainly even with the D810 up to ISO 800, then I think a fractional lead for the D810 onwards, with the 5DS having more chroma noise and maybe by 12,800 I think the D810 is a stop better. I think the high ISO results are about same as the 5DMK III which is very impressive considering double the pixel count. I also suspect that as chroma noise is very well handled by a decent anti noise algorithm the Canon 5Ds once de-noised and downsampled will equal the Nikon D810 and beat the Canon 5DMkIII However I couldn't test it as I don't have any software that handles the RAW files properly yet !

I also could not test dynamic range and shadow recovery due to the lack of RAW file support.

That's interesting, if a little disappointing as a potential customer. One thing I still haven't got my head around is why the images from the Canon are so much (physically) larger as if both Nikon and Canon are 'full frame' surely the pictures should be very similar in size if not resolution? Is this due to them using the telephoto lens without compensating for 'viewpoint' / focal length?

Larger? is due to more resolution isnt it...

The moire is nasty. From what I understand download the raws and process yourself as they have done some odd stuff to them.

But with various images from all sorts of cameras isn't it just the actual sharpness/detail/resolution that changes if the sensor size is the same? I've looked at various comparisons on the site for months and thought the only times the actual image size (so the zoomed section from the chart) changed was when the format/sensor changed?

Then again, I am still rather new to all this digital malarky!

No, the crops are 1:1 pixels, if you have more pixels the image is bigger.

On the theme of resolution and print detail, having moved from large format film and cocking up I've stressed far too much the capabilities of different cameras, but there is one article that may be of interest to those who haven't seen it that shows just how capable modern DSLRs are - the article on Ultraprints on Ming Thein's site

Shot on a Nikon D810 there are details in branches on large prints that are smaller than a human hair and would fit inside the etched markings on the ruler scale shown on one example. Looks like there's enough detail for most purposes!
