Helmet cam on a child

I was wondering if anyone has any experience how comfortable something like a HD hero would be for a child to wear? Looking at getting footage from a childs perspective for a project of mine. They seem to weigh in around 100 grams? plus mount and helmet. Would this be too much for s 5 -8 year old to carry for 30mins?

Probably not.

However have you considered a risk analysis for some random person at some point in the next 20 years decide to report you for child abuse? Probably based on some out of context chance viewing of the video you record.

How on earth could that even cross your mind??? Do you worry about it when you see children's costumes? Nativity plays, sports accessories?

Well, it was slightly tongue in cheek but then the way things are going these days you never know how things will be perceived in hindsight a couple of decades on when the young people involved, now in their 20s and seeking easy cash, start to complain about neck and back problems ....

One might get away with it if they are your own kids .... providing you keep on the right side of them as they grow up.

The answer to the question about weight on the head, if it is to be answered with any degree of authority, probably requires the advice of a qualified medical professional and a sign-off for the kids to be involved from their parent/guardian.

Obviously that shouldn't be necessary in a sensible society but ....

Its for filming parties and such. I thought it could be a possible up sell/added value to parents and also a good source of showreel footage. The safety concerns are my only real issues. I might try it with my own son first, He's always a willing guinea pig.

Well clearly you are planning to record illicit footage of young children at play and peddle them on the internet to strange gentlemen in brown coats... worth a jail sentence I'd say. 20 years should teach you a lesson... in fact anyone who uses the word 'child' should be jailed.

Our generation seems to have the Needless Guilt gene, and it's multiplying like a disease.

I would agree but then add in the mount and more importantly (for total weight) the helmet

The helmet presumably tends to fit around the head so not too much effect on things other than the extra weight. But the camera and mount is going to be somewhere outside the normal Centre of Gravity. Maybe no problem but worth checking. I would have thought it probably OK for a normally developed 8 years old but things might be a bit closer to marginal, for half an hour or so, at 5 or thereabouts.

And then there will be the random 3 year old who has to come to the party because a sibling is there and who will be "distraught" at being left out of the "toy on the head" wearing fun ...

I do wonder if something like Mobius cam velcro'd to baseball cap might be a better option.

Yup, I wouldn't use one for that very reason.

The challenge, of course, is what are you trying to capture.

Downhill skiing a chest cam is probably what you would want.

For a kid's event, maybe not - you presumably get more interesting footage (or none at all that is useful) following where the head is pointing.

If the cabling would hold together I would have thought a bullet cam and a separate small (damage resistant) body mounted recording pack would be a better idea much of the time.

It might depend rather a lot on the participants.
