Quick question for you - a friendly PHer is keen to buy a print of one of my photos (and may be amused to see this post), but I hardly know where to start with a fair price. Don't want to take the piss asking too much, but I'm not keen on giving my work away for peanuts either.

Any guidelines for average prices of landscape prints in various sizes?

Cheers smile

Work out how much it'll cost you to have a single picture printed, including postage, mount, bag, frame etc, then add the percentage on top of the entire cost for your profit. I'd say at least 50% but this is really up to you. I said 'single picture'; so obviously if you print or buy the materials in bulk (due to combined postage, bulk deal, etc), it'll cost you less, but you'd still have to be prepared for a single order which isn't always profitable.

This is always a tricky one. I tend to grab as much from corporates as poss and relax a bit on on-line sales.

I had three small photos online with The Guardian last week which netted me the best part of £300, but I only charged £40 for a 30" print, also sold last week. I've made over £3,500 (inc VAT) on photos sold to national newspapers in one day, and given away dozens of photos free of charge to charities.

Meanwhile, a mate of mine is selling her paintings for £8,500 each. (Though I understand these are 'one offs')

I guess you just have to make up your mind what you are happy with. Despite what the unions say, there is no 'norm'.

ETA (Though newspapers generally pay a recommended fixed rate - which is a take it or leave it deal)

Cheers, thought it might be a 'how long is a piece of string' question! Gives me some ideas to think about anyway.

I saw that pic (fab). You should get it on-line with a company like Zenfolio - you'll sell some, no prob.

It scales for me.

I make more % on smaller prints but less overall. For canvas I charge roughly the retail for the canvas print from the printers and I get them at 50% discount.

Yep, I am amused to see the post (only just now!) so should have chipped in with recommendations, like give it to me free!

We're you happy with the cut they gave you in the end?

It still hasn't arrived, but I'll let you know what I think of the printing when it does. Looking forward to it.

All good, they paid me what they said they would - just stung you more than I expected for the framing etc!

Ironically the print arrived on Saturday. I'm very pleased with it - I know they were pricey, but it came beautifully picked (1 large outer cardboard box with a second inside with foam padding on all corners and additional soft material wrapping, then polysheet over the frame) and the frame is nicely done, suits the picture well. It's a decent quality wooden frame, border approx. 4cm and deep and solid.

The print itself is really good too, sharp and clear with good brightness and tones and looks very like the pictures you posted on the web - closer than the print I bought from Mark, done by a different company, which is a lot bigger, is sharp, but brighter and with the grasses more yellowy green and overall less warm than the online pictures he put up. I reckon we chose the right size for this.

Anyway, thanks again, I'm pleased i contact you and did the deal!
