Anybody got first hand experience of these little beasts?

Despite following all the blurb and reviews, I still haven't got a handle on the main differences between the H and the X.

Which does what better?

I have the X

The H is a LOT cheaper than the X (less than half price), which should tell you most of what you want to know - but the H is well suited to photo journalists I believe.

If you are thinking of buying either, be warned, the D2H is out now and the D2X is out very soon so D1X second hand prices will plummet.

(I might sell mine for a start!)

I knew I could rely on you, Steve!

Yes, it's precisely because prices are about to plummet that I want to get my head round what to look for! Will then start looking for that s/h bargain!

Do you make use of the Capture 4 software, btw?

I use the Nikon View 4 (freebie with the camera) software to shunt pics from the camera to the PC via the firewire. Is that the same as Nikon Capture? I know I have the disk somewhere but was probably too excited to notice all the progs on the CD.

Nikon View 4 (I got 5 with mine) is different to Nikon Capture. You can do a lot more with Capture such as (I think) view and capture images from camera directly to a laptop or pc without using the cameras controls. It is quite expensive to buy separately, Steve mate

Are you stalking me Tim, or just keeping me honest?

Nikon Capture is about £100 IIRC - most people use PS instead, though Capture is essential for remote camera control and uploading curves.

So I hear - never tried it myself! I generally avoid camera software, using PS and configuring the PC to see the camera as a hard drive, then I just cut and paste into the relevant folder.

...and does that mean you shoot and save RAW (or NEF) files and work on them or use the camera to JPEG 'em?

The D2H prices have also plummeted with the imminent arrival of the D2X. I saw at Grays of Westminster (highly reputable Nikon dealers) and not always the cheapest that they are retailing the D2H for £1495 that is £1000 less from last May.

I have a D1x and have handled quite a few D1h files. The h makes suprisingly good images as long as you don't want to print above 12"x8" too often

I shoot Large Fine JPG, but if I wanted to use NEF, PS CS will process them.

So would there be better value to be had from a D2H rather than a D1X if the former wasn't too much extra (both secondhand)?

Now that's an interesting one... I haven't investigated, but a new D2H would probably cost the same (or a little more) as a second hand D1X (??)

That would be a tough call.

a phone call to www.graysofwestminster.com would be the way to go. (If I were you)

I'm thinking of a visit and chat!

I notice that MXV have a D1X and a D2H (although somehow they are asking more for a secondhand D2H than Grays are asking for a new one )

If you are convinced you want to go down the Nikon route then a visit to Grays is highly recommended. To be quite honest I was really surprised to see the price of the D2H, I am getting the D2X as I need the higher file capture size, well i dont but the agency does.
Although the D2H is only 4.2 megapixel, I believe the design of the pixel is different to other digital cameras. The pixel-obsessed will scoff at it but I regularly provide poster size prints for clients. The proof is in the final image and I would say with a tweak in Capture4 and then Photoshop you can produce a better image than shooting slide on the Nikon F5.
I guess it depends on the photography you wish to do, it is said there is 'noise' with the D2H when using ISO800 and above, but if you are shooting action the shutter release speed is quicker than a F5 and you can shoot c8fps

(it's just a very small camera - right Steve?)

Agree with the pixel snob thing ... D1x is half the pixels to other cameras and twice the quality output.

And the D2H has the best designed and nicest handling body and interface of any camera I have ever owned.

It is truly awesome. The handling is unbelievably good, and makes a Canon seem like a clumsy, badly designed brick. And least thats how it feels in my hands...

D2h 4 mp files print beautifully up to A3 IMO.
