Lighting for video

I'm invloved in a rather ambitious home movie production and need to light a set approx 4m x 2m with at least 8 people in it. I could do it with my stills lighting but of course that's flash not continuous.

Hence I need to find something suitable for video, perhaps two softboxes, with decent power and dimmability. I'm advised that some lights have 'striation'... but anyway, if anyone can suggest a suitable kit I'd be grateful. (This is just an amateur film project so costs need to be sensible).

Don't suppose there is any chance it is some sort of "historical" project is there?

If so the modern idiom of TV production lighting might suggest a couple of candles would suffice. Or perhaps light paint with 2 or 3 pocket torches?

Have you checked out what the rental companies might suggest? There may be issues with colour balance depending on the light source. I would assume that something LED is going to be popular these days (subject to colour considerations) due to low power consumption and the associated low heat output.

Would something like this have a place in the set up? (Probably not the full solution though .... even in multiples.)

Costs... Home production. LED lighting. A cheap LED hot shoe mount light will do the job fine. If you want to spend some more you can get better lighting. But a lot of documentary type production is done on this set up now. Can spend from £10 to lots on amazon or ebay. Don't go flashy branded. See if it will do the job and then look for better more powerful kit. Amazon is a lending library. Try it and if it's no good return.

These aren't bad for the money, use trace or bounce them if you want softer light.

Thanks; I saw a set with curly fluorescent lamps, but was unsure how much power would be left by the time it had gone through a softbox.

It will probably be an eBay Chinese job but redheads are unsuitable due to heat and limited distance from subject (and as far as I'm aware, limited options for modifiers - barn doors are no good)

Thanks LongQ, it works now. It's a good price but more of a replacement for a redhead; I'm not convinced that 2-3 of those would light an 8x2m set and/or without shadows - what does the panel think?

4 yongnuo or amaran LED light panels for 4 point lighting, 1 in each corner, as long as subject not too close to any one front panel should do the job quite well - obviously depends on what look you want but its cheaper way that investing in Kinoflo's etc which would be the pro kit. Those panels are £80 each, and can be remotely operated.

Thanks for the links. I should point out this isn't a fixed interview/portrait situation, it's mock-up airliner sections (fuselage and cockpit) with up to 8 passengers plus people walking about.

The bigger LED panels might be big enough to light without obvious shadows - I'll have a ponder, but softboxes are my first choice. Thanks again.

I'd look at hiring some Kinoflo's in that case.
