Another D70 owner

Well I will be when it arrives tomorrow!!
I'm sure that I'll post some more questions for you 'established' users to answer.
While I'm sat typing (unable to take piccy's due to lack of camera), in my excitment I've been telling everyone and a few friends have been asking me to do portrait work for them - so whats the deal regarding copyright for photos, is there a standard terms of sale I need, what if I want to create a portfolio and use some of these portraits? Is there any website that deals with these sorts of issues as well as the techy queries?
Hopefully proper photo questions for my next post!
Cheers
Alan

Welcome to the 'club'
I'm not really 'up' on copyright and what not but I think because you took the image, if you submit it to your own online portfolio, the fact you've taken the picture is copyright in itself as I'm led to understand.
And as for online portfolio, why not make your own? Buy a domain and stick up a site
Enjoy the cam, don't forget to post pics

Nice one.
I do believe the D70 massif are beating the EOS softies at the moment...![]()
whats funny is if i had got a 20D i'd be doing the exact opposite joke... oh well
I will thus add to the ranks of the 20D ownership. I am amazed still at the difference between this and the 300D. As I still have the 300D speed comparison tests of all aspects is amazing.

Stick it in anything but the highest quality and fireaway non-stop until the CF card is full!

Hi Ali
My D70 arrives tomorrow and I can't wait. How are you getting on with yours?
Regarding copyright, it's been a long while since I ever looked at intellectual property law IIRC but the basics are as follows:
I'm certainly not an Intellectual Property expert (in fact I know approximately effall), so please don't rely on this advice - it's meant to serve as a starting point only...

Regarding copyright, it's been a long while since I ever looked at intellectual property law IIRC but the basics are as follows:
- Copyright arises automatically whenever a work is created - there's no need to use the (c) symbol. I were to draw a sketch on a napkin, I automatically own the copyright in that sketch;
- Despite what I said above, you should reserve all rights in any work which is published
- No one has copyright in their own image. Therefore if you take a photo of someone, they don't have any rights in that photo (but see caveat below);
- If you create copyright in the course of employment then it is likely that your employer will own the copyright in the work, rather than yourself. Therefore, when doing commissioned work it would seem sensible to include in your standard T&Cs an agreement that you will own copyright in any and all works created
I'm certainly not an Intellectual Property expert (in fact I know approximately effall), so please don't rely on this advice - it's meant to serve as a starting point only...

Enjoy the D70.
If you plan on using post processing with Photoshop, get a big memory card and shoot NEF files. The stuff you can do with them is endless, as it is the raw image.
A little tip -
If you just want to shoot great quality, more casual shots , then Jpeg fine will be just perfect. If you don't want to do much post processing, I recommend warming the images up a little and compensating for the fact that the D70 tends to underexpose a touch ( which is common, and preserves detail in the shadows if you need it rather than wash them out in a black smudge)
To do this, set the colour temprature to -1 and the exposure compensation to around +.5 to +.75 of a stop extra. This warms up the images a treat and reduces the need to post process IMO.
And don't forget to use your histogram often to check your exposure, keep things to the mid / mid- left of the scale and watch for blown highlights !
Enjoy ! I love mine !

Got it yesterday
Spent all eveing playing - never really used an auto focus camera before so I had to get used to it - took about 200 piccy's of anything/everything around the house, mostly my son Tom (11 months old so quite an interesting subject for me anyway!). 1gb memory cards are great aren't they!! You can just keep taking photos.
Out of those 200 I've kept 50 - though mostly cos they were of Tom rather than they were good pictures. Can't wait to finish work and get back to playing.

I bet you did! If you can face it, do try to get through the manual - it will take several sessions - but you will learn more about the capabilities of the camera that way than by poking buttons at random.
Re complexity, use Auto if you have to to start with, but try to progress to P and then A and S. That way you gradually take more control so you can take the pictures you want to take. Just grow into it at your own pace. Leave Auto behind when you're ready, but you don't need Manual, spot metering and RAW to get great results.
Over to you Ali
