Criteria.

Sub £100
Doesn't need to be able to do/be anything fancy.
Doesn't need to be ultra portable / light (I'm still young)
Will be used outdoors as opposed to in a studio
Will be used occasionally for wildlife (but i tend to handhold) but more often for landscapes ( i want to do more of these)
Would be useful if it can be inverted / get low to the ground
Must come ready to be used (i.e the £100 needs to include the head)
Will only be used "occasionally" hence not wanting to spend big money.

My quick research comes up with this which seems good VFM.

Is there anything i should be looking for / avoiding? Pan head / Ball head?

TIA for any help!

James

Blurb says max load is 4kg but spec says 3kg.

Load and height (ideally without using the centre column) are criteria that should not be overlooked.

Heads can be "interesting". I have a large tripod with a very solid ball head. Once something is attached it is attached. Walking around with heavy body and large lens attached to the tripod is not problem.

I have a smaller tripod for travel. Very sound for what it is intended to do but not in the same way that the big one is. The ball head is fine although there are times I would like to try a decent 3 way T&P head. The head will deal with a 1D size Canon and a lens at the smaller end of the size and weight spectrum but feels more comfortable with a lighter dSLR and perfect with something like G series.

The travel tripod would break your budget but is adaptable and can even be quickly set up as a monopod.

Bear in mind that if you ever want to use the camera in portrait orientation a good balll head will allow tha but the weight will be hanging off centre and therefore is possibly more of a factor for stability if your kit is at the upper end of the weight capacity. A suitable L bracket can overcome that but check that the head mount fitting is a "standard" if you want the widest choice for a direct mount bracket.

My heaviest lens weighs 1750g and my 50d weighs 810g, so not currently going to exceed the lower 3kg limit of that set up.

Thanks for the tips re: head types LongQ, i will bear that i mind smile

Thanks PBLP! This one http://www.redsnapperuk.com/camera-accessories/RSF... seems to outpace the one i linked to in every way, and its cheaper, even more so with the 3 way pan/tilt as opposed to ball head. Could be a very good shout!

Cheers!

Yep.

But then I always like a "margin for error" in these matters - a policy that seems to work when I use it and fail when I don't.

wink

Plus you never know what heavy lens you might be about to purchase ....

You don't want to go by weight only, what's the longest lens you have? My heavy duty tripod can handle 40kg according to the manufacturer, but with a 500 on it, you still see 'vibration' in the viewfinder.

400mm is the longest. I wold only be shooting wildlife with that lens on, so would be using relatively fast shutter speeds anyway, so it shouldn't be an issue.

The Redsnapper one linked above reckons it has an 8kg limit... this would be 3-4 times my current max and so should be a good shout.

I totally understand the old adage "Buy cheap, buy twice" but I have been doing photography for 5 or 6 years with no tripod (other then one that can only be described as a toy, but this broke years ago) and imagine that it will only rarely be used, so I don't want to spend big £ on one (I am not going to be attempting milky way shots like yours Rob wink )

Unless you are saying that the redsnapper one above wouldn't serve the purpose I am describing and I would need to raise my budget?

I've got the Redsnapper one and have been pleased with it. I'd suggest a ball head, although it is mostly down to personal preference.

Redsnapper look ok from what I can tell, rather like the threeleggedthing, seem to be a range of that kind of stuff.

make sure it gets your camera to eye level without the centre column tho.

Also pleased with my Redsnapper, it's big and heavy but has good features and works well

ONE OF MY FAMOUS GIVEAWAYS (see Home Cinema forums!)

Dude - I have the Manfrotto 055PRO-B, with the 490RC4 ball head. The tripod's prob only one generation old, has had only very light and occasional use (binoculars), and the only flaw is that the 'loop' near the top where a strap would attach, has broken - oddly brittle, it would seem. However - it's still easy to strap up, if needed.

The head comes with two quick-release plates - the only caveat again being that they don't have the rubber 'mat' that would normally be found covering their surface - this either won't bother you, or you can buy a new plate anyway, easily.

However - it'll need to be collected from me in Northampton, else I am in Ruislip of a Saturday, or collection somehow arranged!

James gets first dibs on the above-described, but I also have what must be several generations old - the Manfrotto 055CB, coupled with a three-way video-orientated head - the 329RC4, which is also a quick-release system. If James doesn't need that second quick-release plate, then this comes with one plate (again, no rubber mat).

This would make most sense for anyone that can easily fly by where I live - J15 of the M1.

An extremely generous offer Arif, thank you, and thanks for pointing me back here with your PM!

Northampton is a 4 1/2 hr round trip, so hardly round the corner! (ruislip is closer... but my sat's are booked up for the next few weeks)

I am planning to visit my brother in leeds in 2-3 weeks so if possible i could swing past then, that would tie in nicely. What i will say though is that if there is someone around the corner from you in need of a tripod, i am happy to give up my 'dibs' as there is always a chance i won't make it up. I am sure there is someone more worthy of such a generous offer than me!

Is it okay if i keep you posted, i will keep an eye on this thread and when i know my movements in the next few weeks (would't make sense to make a special trip if i am heading up that way anyway!) i will pop you a PM.

Thanks again for your very generous offer!

TRIPOD No.1 NOW SPOKEN FOR (by James)!

James buddy - it's yours, so no stressing about how exactly to get hold of it. If the Leeds plan doesn't work out, we can think of other means - I might try to fly by your end, for example.

It's funny, I only logged on today to effect the tripod giveaway, only to find your thread where you're actually looking for one! Destiny!

TRIPOD No.2 - still wanting a home, ideally by someone who can fly by J15 of the M1, or Ruslip of a Saturday, or Watford of a Sunday (James - you too, if that helps!).

P.s. Googling up the model numbers still brings up pictures of the items in question (i.e. previous generations/iterations) - even though they're both 055 Series.

I've just upgraded to the latest version of the 055 - have never used anything else!

Used to be for photography - but the World left me by - my cameras are the EOS 1V! Little did I know, the last of its kind.
