I bought this used lens of ebay a while back. Last week was the first chance to try it out. I'm rather pleased. It is a little slow compared to a Silent Wave lens like my 18 - 70. Still, it does have that nice heavy feel to it.

I'm thinking of getting a similar lens, the Sigma 70-200 f2.8 (which luckily is silent wave, or 'HSM' in Sigma-speak).

How do you find the 80-200 compares in handling and performance to a 'normal telephoto, eg a 70-300 f4-5.6?

It is very difficult to compare. I have nothing longer. I only have the 18 - 70 F3.5-4.5 G IF ED to compare it with or the 35 - 80 that came with my F50 camera.

Although initialy it feels slow to repond in your hand when playing with it. At no time in the 65-70 shots that I took did it show any weakness. It is mighty heavy and has that lovely robust feel that lower end lens just do not have. (I would not mug someone holding one ) The action is smooth and with the 1.5 ratio of a DSLR it nevver felt too short.

I want it mainly for motor sport. Hopefully I can get along to an event soon and give it a proper work out.

Cheers
