Tripod for a compact camera

A simple question really - I'm after a tripod for a Canon Powershot HS120 HS (just a regular digital comapct) to shoot videos of myself while I'm standing up.
I'm wondering whether any tripod will do the function or are the attachments different for difference cameras - I assume a DSLR has a bigger bracket of some kind - this camera just has a screw thread on the underside approx 7-8mm in diameter

Something reasonably cheap a functional will suffice for now as I may get a DSLR in the coming months

The 1/4" tripod socket is common to almost every camera, so carry on
