*BIG* Siberia Pics *BIG*
Discussion
This is not a creative criticism, but there's something about the visual quality of your photos that rub me the wrong way. To my eyes they somehow have that aritifical "CG" quality, if you know what I mean. The colours seem more saturated than our eyes see them, and everything is just well, so incredibly sharp - so much so that in a couple of shots there appears to be not much depth.
I think that artistically they are brilliant, and you have a good eye for subject and especially composition.
But somehow they visually come across to me as too sanitised, and I can't get over it when looking at the pics - there's just something about them that irks me slightly but I can't place a finger on it.
I am probably alone in this opinion though, and yes, lovely shots.

What was the kit?
D1X
Nikkor 50mm f/1.8, probably used 40% of the time. (had only just got it 2nd hand off ebay, was my first real go with it. The beginning of my realisation that primes were in fact useful)
Nikkor 18-35mm f/3.5-4.5, used 55% of the time. Nice cheap lens, didn't need the faster aperture, although would have been nice anyway.
Nikkor 80-400mm VR f/3.5-4.5, only used for a couple of the pics above, rarely use it when not taking photos of cars. Still a lovely lens

A few are desaturated!
These files have all been optimised for print on my CRT, so the colours and contrast are all increased somewhat from what might be considered normal on a standard screen. They have all been individually sharpened at full Res, then had a batch action done as they were resized. Possibly the top one of the Gulag files is a fraction overdone, but I think it's more artifacts from the resizing.
Incidentally, the greens in the pictore of the pine needles actually came out of the camera looking like that, I don't know why. It hasn't happened before or since. Looks to me like Velvia

All I would do (apart from the cloning) is play with the levels. I guess to me it looks a lot more "natural" than the artifically-sharpened post-processed photo.
when I took this photo I thought that the wires were really nice...
But as always, just my opinion.
And wonderful shots nevertheless - I always assumed Siberia to be this big barren wasteland of nothingness. You've shown there are some things there at least!

Fair enough, I'm not going to argue with your opinion! You're not using a Sony LCD are you?

I wouldn't play cards with those guys as the deck looks somewhat marked ! Love the photos, my vote goes to the super-saturated versions as they're much more lively !
There's a good story behind those cards. The guy in the photo is a curator of a small Gulag museum in th emiddle of nowhere. The cards were made by inmates in the 50s from old bits of newspaper, and the symbols are from berry juice.

David,
you are the king of the clone tool. Thats a good clean up and that thing with the bridesmaid a while back was awesome.
I like!
Matt
lol, thanks. The bridesmaid was an amusing one - the type where when I first looked at I thought "impossible" but after a couple of hours chipping away it comes out OK. Luckily I don't have to do that too often, although I do enjoy it, it's hard work being 100% concentrated for a few hours!
Must admit that my eyes/screen aren't as sensitive, but now I've seen the original shot of the hut I can see what DeaDLock means.
Lovely photos though - I also like the truck one, but the people are great too. Lived in faces.
The really great thing, though, is that I know without doubt that if Siberia is one place I never see in my life, I won't be too upset about it!
And they say it's grim oop North!

And they say it's grim oop North! This thread is great - I love the photos for their own sake and the fact they are of siberia is even more interesting. I'm planning a trip with a friend on the trans-siberian this summer - the moscow - irkutsk - ulan baatar - beijing route. Any siberian travel tips? Any more photos? What were you doing in Siberia?
Can't get over how nice these photos are.
