Playing around with PhotoShop last night. Really powerful but going to take me ages to learn. Was quite pleased with this one anyway:

But that's one of the problems with PS, it does so much yet to try and learn it all is a daunting task. I'm tempted to say what's the easy way a "Dummies" book, or what?

that's a sterling effort. The only thing I would have done differently is to make the transition between blurred and sharp areas a bit more gradual

You won't, just pick the bits you like/use/need most. I use it on a 'need-to-know' basis otherwise my head would explode!

I agree. The different feathering techniques are well worth learning.
