What do we think?

First thing that caught my eye was that the D5 coukd capture (in RAW) an entire 100m sprint!

Hadn't seen the term 'AF-P' before so waded in.

'These are also the first Nikon lenses to allow users to switch between Auto Focus and Manual Focus, or turn VR on and off, using the camera menu*. With no switches on the lens barrel itself, there’s no chance of accidentally changing settings when the time comes to take the shot.'

Balls, it's because menus are cheaper than switches! (and harder to use in combat). Gotta love marketing.

Ah - didn't see that. That's a sneaky excuse for a cost-cutting con! Of course your subject will wait while you're negotiating a load of menus to take control of that!!!

The new D500 looks amazing, I am seriously tempted. I was going to get a 7200 as a backup body but I think I will be changing my plans.

4K 30p
3-axis electronic VR w/ video
auto-ISO smoothing during video
20.9mp
10fps
153pt AF from the D5 (fills the viewfinder edge to edge - but not top to bottom. its like a 16:9 AF coverage on a 2:3 frame)
AF joystick from the D4
expeed 5
79-shot 14bit uncompressed buffer (200 with xqd?)
no popup flash
iso 50-1,640,000 (expand)
180k rgb metering and scene recognition
mag/carbon-fiber body
200k shutter rated
3.2 inch 2359K-dot TILTING TOUCH SCREEN
XQD/SD combo (stupid)
snapbridge (NFC/Wi-Fi/BT)

It is literally EVERYTHING that had been asked for in a pro DX body.

I had to Google that; it's not on the posted link.

So the 'Dxxx' series is back, albeit having missed the D400.

It looks good but at £1700 I don't need it that badly!

I'd like to see some sample 4k video from the D500. That could be a great all-round camera at that price.

I'm guessing it's an error in the print on the D5, three minute limit on the record time for 4K recording confused

Action cam could be kind of cool.

I think that's been answered somewhere else. It's a 30min recording limit but the 30 mins is split into multiple 3 min files.
TBH, I'd just buy an ATOMOS and record externally.

Still makes it a relatively cost-effective 4K video camera if you wanted a decent stills camera anyway. Especially if you already own the glass for it...

About time the D500 turned up, looks like a decent competitor to the 7d2.

D5 is as much of an irrelevance to me as the d4 and 1dx really, they are for pro sports togs pretty much alone now, everyone else is better suited to another body.

Somewhat confused as to why nikon needed to go with two 18-55 kit lenses with the new stepper motors? Does their VR add that much extra??

I think Nikon have put the train back on the tracks. Having three 'levels' of bodies worked well, but someone tried to kill off the Dxxx level by pumping up the lower level and dumbing down the higher level.

But then it was Nikon who said that they would never launch FX because DX was all you needed, then launched FX - and are now selling the benefits of DX... I think this is called 'strategy'.

that or 'marketing'.

yep! my biggest frustration switching from D700 to D800 was / is having to hold a but in and spin dials to change the focus mode. Nuts!

Not that past performance is ever a guide to the future, but the Df I got last year would have been so far out of my budget until I found a low mileage secondhand one. I predict that this time next year the D500 will be sub £1,200 (secondhand, if not new) and will then look a tempting deal for those who like the advantages to be found in a DX format.....

(Not my cup of char, though: when it comes to sensors, Size Matters)

DRTV has reviewed the D5 in the style of Top Gear !

( ok, ok, so its actually from months ago, doesn't feature a D5, and is wrong on all the specs, but its still a good watch )

Much like the Neanderthals in Spain wink

Except we want more ISO and they wanted more forehead.

My excuse is I never thought the 300 or 300s was such a quantum leap as to warrant the investment - I just didn't expect the sods to take so long to launch the next iteration.... my forehead has expanded around to my neck in the 8 years or whatever they've taken! boxedin
