Is this right? We've been sent theses settings to take pictures of teeth (exciting I know). At work it's a crop sensor dslr with a 100 mm macro lense and flash, but there photographs come out black. Also tried on my full frame with the same results

So what would you change to achieve the pictures in the picture I've posted? It's the intraoral picture we are trying to do.

Well, I would think that at those settings, all the illumination is going to be from the flash. Firstly, did the flash fire? Secondly, what settings were on the flash? Set the flash to ETTL mode (or equivalent) and try again. Perhaps the flash was on manual at too low a setting. Presumably you've thought of all that though, but it's all I can think of. Oh, and remember to take the lens cap off. Only joking!

Every flash photo is two exposures in one.

Ambient, and flash.

Those settings, ISO 100, 1/125th, f11-29 :O will give you no ambient.

so the flash is doing all the work.

What camera, what flash, what mode are you shooting on ( manual, Av etc) what have you got the flash set to?

Ah so could be the flash not firing, it's a ring flash at the end of the lense. it's constantly on (Lit up) so we need to change that.
We'll give that a go in the morning, it's all canon gear I think a 600d with a canon 100mm f/2.8 macro lense. the flash is third party so I'll have a play with it.

I'm a little out of touch with the the whole photography thing at the minute, been trying to rack my brains on how the set it all up again.

All dentists are good at photography!

I have a boxfull of slides of teeth taken in the 1960s upstairs!

If the flash is firing (open your other eye to see) I'd guess it's not synching with the shutter. You probably need it at 1/200th or slower.

Sound like the flash has a modelling light mode (constantly on) to give some chance of seeing what you are trying to focus on. AF could be a challenge - to say the least.

fstops required for DoF.

I'm not sure a ring flash will work for you for that shot - at least not without an additional slave light from the side.
