My new lens arrived today and I've been bored at work so had a play with macro mode.

Of course there's nothing interesting to take pictures of in the office so I snapped away at a pile of dead kit - talk about shallow DOF:

Macro mode is fun. Shame I can't seem to hold the lens steady at 300mm.

It is once you know what you're doing!

This is one of my first attempts shooting small things -

As you can see, it wasn't very successful. I am getting better now (or I like to think so), this is one of my more recent efforts -

Macro is fascinating: a new world. But be prepared for sod-all DOF, camera-shake and tricky lighting if you're really close to the subject. True macro means 1:1 magnification - ie a postage stamp will almost fill the viewfinder on a DSLR - so a tripod and good lighting are essential.

This is how close a Micro Nikkor 60mm gets:

(Damn, you know you've been pooting too much when you rename a file 'rename' )

My macro mode only works over 200mm so getting close is out of the question! I can only be about 4 feet away as a minimum!
