Fellow PH'ers.

I have been saving my personal photos for the last 11 years onto a Western Digital portable hard drive. Last month, I could no longer access the Hard Drive. This was all the photos of my children growing up, holidays, events etc. Yes, I am a muppet and should have burnt DVDs or saved somewhere else in addition....

Thankfully, I found a freind on Piston heads who has kindly helped to recover my data. Thanks if you are reading!

I now have the photos back on a new hard drive, however all file names are lost and they are just sorted into folders by their extention i.e - jpg, mp4 etc.

I do not know (i am not technical) how to determine if these files still have associated xif data. If they still have xif data, can anyone suggest any good free sw that could sort out my files into some sort of date order? I can then trawl through them and return to some sort of order, but at the moment i have 500Gb of raw data!

Any help please?

Google Picasa will index your photos in date order and then display them in a flat format no matter how many folders down that they have been buried in.

Rumour has it that Google may be discontinuing the software shortly but thankfully it is still available to download at the moment.

There is no need to upload your photos to the cloud if you don't want to do so.

I have tens of thousands of photos on multiple hard drives (totalling just under 4400 folders) so can vouch that it's pretty bullet-proof.
