Looking to purchase a D70 at the minute.

Can anyone recommend ebay dealers or am I as well off going to dabs for a body and speccing up over time.

Any disadvantages to getting US or HK spec?

Need to buy before easter so I can get all those pics of my Boxster in the west of ireland.

...nothing like the sunsets over Galway Bay...sob sob.

Some points to ponder.
1) If you import from HK or US you stand a good chance of being caught for import duty, VAT and handling fees. So unless you're buying it through a business and can reclaim stuff, make sure the saving is worth it.
2) An 'international warranty' can mean that you have to send it back to the country of purchase for any attention.
I bought the body with 18-70mm AF-S lens from the UK (it's a very good lens and good value if bought with the body). However, for lenses and other stuff I don't mind buying via eBay new or even second-hand.

Hope this is useful

Unless it's changed since: I enquired with Customs about 2 or 3 years back:

if it's primarily a still camera it's duty free (can't remember about vat)
If it's primarily a video camera - duty payable.

Worth checking also Canon usually do warranties by region whereas Nikon do worldwide so also worth checking.

Happy snapping!

OK, reading the various thread on the D70 I think going for the 18-70 lense is a must.

Camara Box are selling the body and 18-70 for £727 - with the cash back that comes to just £627!

Think I am sold on that as it has full UK spec and UK warranty.

I bought mine from Pixmania and, before so, checked with Nikon - the warranty is valid in the UK and work can be done in the UK. Just so you know like!

Cameras direct are doing D70's with the 18-70mm lens for £707 plus the £100 cashback deal, making it in total cost £607. but i think they're out of stock at the moment, but im sure they will have more stock in very soon.

in the meantime, the site is at www.camerasdirect.co.uk/desc.asp?id=3283

by the way, all of these cameras are UK models.

CostCo is £693 (in VAT) before £100 cashback. They have a no quibble returns policy also.
I did the deed last week but have spent the past 7 days trying to restore my PC after losing all my data after trying to repartition the HD to make room for pictures.
I have only now found a little time to try out the camera.

Silly question: where do I find or how do I get access to a CostCo. Can I buy online?

Cheers,

Adrian

As they say, there's no such thing as a silly question.

I believe, IIRC, you have to be "eligible" to join up. I believe they have an interwebbie site which tells you all you need to know. It's whether you are running you're own business or are connected to a business which is eligible.

(Mrs Beano has the ability to join, when we get round to it, through her works - a big broadcasting company)

Ah yes - have a look here

I used my mates card to purchase the D70. He is a builder/joiner and has had a "trade" card for years. My mum & dad also have one, but I've no idea how they managed to get theirs as they do not have a business.
Easiest way to gain access is to ask around and see if you can find anyone who has membership and is willing to allow you to use their card. In my experience they never check the picture or name on the card but do like a glance of it when you enter the warehouse.
