Just ordered a Pentax Optio S5i for the very reasonable price of £185 delivered.

However Pixmania have just sent me an email asking for proof of identity and address which I have just faxed to them. Is this normal?? or is it because this is the first I have used my new credit card?

Thanks,

Phill

I think its a good idea! I just wasn't expecting it!

Any idea how long their "approval" cycle lasts. Would be nice to see the online order move from pending into complete.

Cheers for your advice! Whats even better was that I ordered it on the credit card and was then pulled into the boss's office to be told i'm getting a £1500 bonus! Lovely Jubbly!

Quick - change the order!

Get the 5n instead for the extra 30 quid or so .... (if it is stock).

Its not available until the 15/3. I want to play now! lol

Anyway i'd rather keep it on the cheaper side of £200's just in case it goes walk about + it means I can order a couple of large fast SD cards!

Just checked my order - Already dispatched!

I understand that. The 5i was delayed by about a month just before the original availability date. Could happen again.

WooHoo! It arrived this morning!

Its currently sitting on my desk in the cradle charging up.

First impressions are good, very small, light and well made.

BUT............

Why do does it only have 10Mb memory built in. Memory is cheap!! This won't be an issue for me as i've got a 128Mb SD Card and i'm planning on getting an 512Mb (or larger) ultra fast card but it just so stupid to only put a tiny amount of memory in it.

The amount of free memory has declined as the spec has improved. S3 had close to 12Mb iirc, S5n claims just 9.3.

It' snot used anyway if you have a card fitted so I think the main purpose is simply to provide interanal software memory resource and an ability to check it works without the need for a card.

Most people will want to have exchangable high capacity cards anyway I reckon.

My Sony U30 - only 2Mpix so much smaller files - only had a 8Mb memory stick as standard and nothing on-board.

Back to the original comment.
I would be very cautious about sending such ID, identity fraud is prevalent nowadays so would urge all to exercise caution when asked

Ok had a chance to have a play.

Observations so far......

Very easy to navigate the menus
Excellent picture quality
Need to set a default profile I am happy with (Lots to use from but i want one for indoors and one for car shots) - LongQ - Any suggestions??
The manual is in French so does anyone know where I can get a pdf version from?

The next problem is i've left my memory card at home and i'm away for a few days so I can't have a proper play!

So far so good!

Oh yeah and I brought a packet of Altoids mints and the camera does fit in the metal tin but the lid won't close. Which is a shame as it would be a good party trick lol
