See - I knew you'd understand!

Yes, ditched ideas for a D2H or D100 and busy trying to understand the D70 manual, having taken advantage of the best daal I could find at FoI...

OK! I think I've sussed most things in the time it's taken to charge the battery up. Just found that AF-C and AF-S controls are in the menu instead of being on the front switch. That's a bit disappointing.

Found out how to set the right focus zone preference (something I never sussed on the F100!) and the AE-L and AF-L preferences, too

Now I can only see that aperture can be set from the sub-comand dial at the mo. How do you reset that that to the aperture ring?

Am I a "Cluddite" now?

Having popped battery and card in and gone through all the settings, I'm all excited now. I think I know what all the fuss is about!!!

Completely out of character but I'm going to RTFM a bit more......

What's happening to this world??? Men are reading the manual? Whatever next? Women learning to map-read?

I agree; it's one of the more useful controls - yet they've out a bloody great button on the back just to change focus areas, which I never use. Still, the only way to get a perfect camera is to design it yourself!

You can't: the aperture is always set from the camera; the aperture ring on the lens stays locked to the smallest aperture. However, you can swap the functions of the two dials in the custom menu if you prefer.
If you think the D70 manual is tough, wait til you get a Speedlight

Hmm! Just worked this out!

Also the DoF preview is placed just where the AF-L button was onl previous cameras - and you can't independently lock aperture and focus..... Guess we'll let the button lock exposure and we can always focus manually....

Oh! FFS Beano!! Stop whinging and get on and shoot something!

Sorry! - thought I'd get that last bit in before you lot did!!!

Feels pretty nice with the old 85mm fitted

Aperture priority will 'lock' aperture, if that's what you mean?
Semi-depressing the shutter release will lock focus (on AF-S mode, which is where I keep mine). Or as you say, use manual focus.
There are so many ways to use it, it's a just a question of finding out which settings you get on best with I think.

Well I don't claim to have created any masterpieces, but it's a great camera to use and I'm revelling in the "new" lenses I've got; like my "new" 270mm F2.8 and my 42-105!

CameraWorld - as one of their "show specials" at Focus on Imaging.

Their website here

I was originally put off. I went up to their stand and asked whether they had any D100s. I got a "no" and the guy turned away! But I reasoned that the D70 couldn't fall significantly further in price, so I returned later and was served by a much more reasonable chap!

According to their website the D100s are refurbished... odd.

Yup! I thought I'd find out all about them - whether they been refurbed by Nikon UK et cetera and pick up a 100 with the MB at a great price. Never got to have that discussion....

Plus, I'd read the article in Nikonians Ezine where the guy had bought the 70 as a back up and ended up using it all the time.

Good work Beano!

I'm loving my D70 and the whole digital thang - '500 shots in one day and no processing charges, sir?' - think so!

Day off tomorrow, so time to get snapping
