When there's a large image and several windows open, my 17" TFT is getting a bit crowded these days.

What's the better option, another 17" to go next to it, or sell the one I have and get a single 20" that will do 1600x1200? 2 x 17" is better value (£ per square inch) but the 20" will show a bigger image and take up less room.

Just interested to see which route you took and why.

I have a single 21" at 1600x1200 and although it is useful a lot of the time I find it a bit large and cumbersome really. Having used two briefly elsewhere I would rather have two smaller monitors. Having said that I think 19" is probably ideal for working on images.

The only thing about 19" is that they're still 1280x768. In other words, no more resolution than the 17", just bigger.

2 monitors is the way to go!

That way you can get Photoshop setup so that the left screen is workspace and ALL the tools and palettes can be permanently open on the right screen

2 Monitors is definately the best way to work in photoshop, as has already been said, one monitor for menus and the other for your workspace.

I've got 2 monitors at home and work - I struggle to work with a single one now. Tempted to go to three at home, but probably unnecessary!
