Hi all,

A few years ago the answer would have been Fickr, but what is it now?

We have a ton of photos across different parts of the family, all over the world, and we want to be able to put them into an album, be able to tag people in the historical photos, comment etc. Ideally I'd like to be able to filter on tagged people like you used to be able to in Picasa. Also want to make it secure so only family can join in. Flickr seems a natural fit - but is there anything better these days? Don't really want to use Facebook.

Still flickr for us.

Google Photos has some promise but there's no way to make an album private to just certain people - it's either shared or not, and the only control you have is who you give the link to.

I'm having a go at Irista at the moment. Seems OK.

Yup but you can stop re-shares of the link, effectively only people who have the link see the album

I still use Flickr and have 1,000s of photos on there. However non of my family bothers anymore as we have a shared Apple photo album between me, my wife and grandparents. I still stick the photos on Flickr (in family visibility) but I don't think anyone sees them other than me!

I'm the same, Flickr is good for general photo sharing, but as most of my family have Apple devices we use Apple Photo sharing, which works really well.

I know you said you don't want to use Facebook but everyone is on it and you can limit who sees what in each album and filter by people tagged in the photos so it does sound like quite a good fit. I don't bother uploading photos to anything else these days as it's the easiest way for everyone else to see them.

Facebook does seem to ruin the quality though.

do they all have iOS devices? - we use photo stream which is great, its there on their device within minutes of adding it, they can save to device, add to it themselves and you can configure laptops for it too..

You can avoid that if you resize before uploading. IIRC 2048px on the longest side is the magic number, but there are plenty of instructions online.

Is something like https://www.dropbox.com/ what you are looking for?
