My mother needs a new digital camera as the one she currently uses is poor. I don't need and optical zoom or fancy settings as she won't use them. So what simple point and click options are there that will give a good picture?

Interesting question. A simple, affordable fixed focal length camera with good picture quality...

That's a bit like looking for a mobile phone that's only a phone!

You're thinking of a big buttoned basic Doro mobile phone http://www.doro.co.uk/ which even my none-tech savvy OAP mum managed to use, they even fit a camera to the newer models though I'm not sure how good the camera is - we bought the basic phone only one!

A £10 one from Tesco that came with £10 free credit. An old iPhone would be 10 times better than the old digital camera she's using currently.

Perhaps a low-end Lumix compact then. It will have a zoom lens but she can ignore it. I'm sure there'll be end-of-line models on Amazon for <£100.

There are a few sub £100 ones. Thanks. Still think it will be too complex for her but it will give far better pictures than the grainy rubbish her current one is giving.

You know this but:

Almost every compact camera can be left in 'auto' mode, so the quality of the photo will be down to the quality of the lens & sensor, though a steady hand is essential.

You don't mention a budget? A friend of mine's mum has just spent over £2k on a compact. Just because they are a mum doesn't mean they have to put up with a crap camera! wink

RX100 mk 1 takes great photos in auto... no skill involved.

£100 would be a good budget point. It will definitely be stuck on auto with instructions not to mess with anything!

Canon Ixus. Took some really good pictures with mine. They're dirt cheap now and fit in your trouser pocket. A proper point and shoot.
