I thought I'd give my macro lens a bit of a workout on some orchids that we got at the weekend, and also practice using RawShooter to process the RAW files.

These are a few of the shots that I got - what do you reckon?

If anyone is interested in seeing the last shot in full 16.7MP glory, right click and "save target as" here

The detail in that is stunning!

I can't even begin to imagine what the detail could have been if it had been taken by a D2X!

I reckon that makes a refreshing change to car photos

Not sure the white b/g suits white flowers though.

holy smokes batman, thats how the other half live then Max resolution I get is 2048*1536

Mighty impressive stuff, the colourful one at the top is very crisp but the rest seem to have a sheen, almost like glass/slightly soft look to them? Is that just an after affect of the very shallow DOF, could that have been avoided at all or is it like that because thats what happens?

That's easy - just take off about 6MP

Certain points in all three are very sharp, but DOF is so shallow at those distances, that the image quickly goes out of focus. I wanted to keep shutter speeds reasonably high so only went down to f8 - hence only small areas being sharp. To increase the area in focus, I could have used a smaller aperture (e.g., f16 or f32).

I do wish you hadn't done that.

I keep promising myself I don't need a 1DsII, but every time I see a jpg from one my credit card gets nervous...

Any chance you could pop them on photobox or somewhere, so I can purchase one?

I think I like the top one best, good colour saturation though I think the lighting looks a bit flat in all of them. Perhaps a little fill-in flash or a coloured reflector to the side would give it that bit extra ?
