Being photogenic

After taking about 50 snapshots at a night out last week I got to wondering about what makes certain people photogenic. Some people in my pictures looked just as they do in real life, some looked miles better and some (even the good looking ones) looked absolutely awful even though they looked good "in the flesh" on the night. And no that's not the beer talking

So a question for all of the more photographically educated on here - is it really the case that certain people just never look good in photos? Or is it just that many people (myself included) just don't know how to photograph people properly?

After all when I see expertly done portraits of "less beautiful people" thay still look "good", if you see what I mean... Maybe it's all in my mind
