As per title really - I have a Hero 5 so the Karma seems like the obvious choice.

However, it just isn't as good a drone as the Mavic. I want Follow Me. I want the 40% longer flying time. I want the better stability, obstacle avoidance etc.

The Mavic is also more portable.

The Karma has the more convenient remote - and I prefer the camera footage.

I keep to-ing and fro-ing!

Essentially - I want it for hiking / cycling / expolring here in Hong Kong, and I want it for a ski expedition in Norway (where the follow function and portability would pay dividends).

As far as I can tell - the Mavic is the better drone, without question. The Karma price builds in the expensive hand held gimball thing and a big (poorly designed) rucksack - which would be of little use given that I'd want to take it with a load of other gear.

The heart says get the Karma, they might update the software to include a follow function. The head says get the mavic - it's better in every way..?

Mavic for me. Wouldn't even consider the Karma after all the hassle owners have had with the original

Just take a look at the reviews on YouTube, the Karma isn't worth the money. The Mavic is a far better choice.

Why would you even consider Karma??? It's inferior in every possible way.
Ok, it's cheaper.

I'm really not a fan of DJI, but given your requirements it's the Mavic all the way.

The Hero 5 is fine as an action cam, but when mounted on a drone the lens distortion becomes really intrusive. The Karma is too big, dumb as a box of bricks and the controller is under developed.

Just remember that whatever you buy will be out of date in six months time - and despite the claims, the autonomous modes (follow me etc.) aren't all that good - I'm not sure the Mavic is capable of altitude changes in follow me, so Skiing and mountain hiking won't work.

Depending on where you go, you'll find increasingly strong restrictions on drone usage. A lot of ski resorts outright ban drones and you may well find similar problems in public spaces in Hong Kong. Little drones like the Mavic are noisy, intrusive, buzzy things that a lot of people don't like (and big drones are just scary), so you have to have a bit of a thick skin to throw them up in the air when you're out and about. You also have to be aware of the ability of drones to inflict serious damage - you have a machine that weighs as much as half a house brick and is capable of going 40 miles an hour - and flyaways are a real thing. There is a real learning curve to flying well and flying safe,

That said, they're awesome fun to fly, rewarding to get skilled at and can produce fantastic footage.

As a Mavic owner and formerly a phantom 3 pro owner I can highly recommend the DJI.
Before buying I did the usual comparison between the Karma and Mavic and it was a no brainer for me - DJI just has so much more "knowledge" of drones.
The flight modes are great and a lot more intelligent than the Gopro and like has already been mentioned, the battery life is superior.
The active track / follow me can adjust altitude as long as you are climbing - DJI programmed the software to avoid descending to avoid crashes into objects below.

Agreed with all of the above, and discovered I live 200m from the dojo flagship store in Causeway Bay so went to have a look.

They didn't have any stock though so I bought from flycamhk - a tiny shop in an arcade in Wanchai and walked out with oney. It seemed like a complete no brainier after researching further. So far, really pleased with it.

Nope... well, the batteries don't fall out now.

Did you say ...Norway??

...Could a Staaker be an option for you? It's a platform optimized for 'Follow Me' modes. Made in Norway.

It carries a motorized gimbal mount for a GoPro to keep you in the frame.. and follows a transponder on your wrist from which you toggle between 5 flight modes, plus distance and altitude adjust.. however, there is only one mode in which you control it.

... it'l fly 50mph, with 20 minute battery time...

I put a pre-order in for one, product shipments start in middle of this month..
