Youtube has some free music, can't tell you how good is it though.

I'm sure you know, but just in case, you can use most music these days on YT, but you may get ads. If you don't want ads, then as you say, copyright free is the way to go.
The copyright holders also seem to have a habit of restricting which device types your video can be played on.I fell foul of this recently when using some pop music for a wedding montage for my sister, only discovering a few hours later that no one could view it as the copyright holder denies viewing on mobile devices. Well that would be all the members of the family then...
Facebook are also incredibly sniffy about it.
I've just had a threat from YT. The suggestion is that if I get two more strikes they will close my channel.
There's Free Background Music, which is great as far as it goes, but it is background music. I'd like some lyrics that the video can play to.
I am confused by the rights allowed. I'd like a clear cut 'Yes you can if you . . .' etc.
I'm happy to give endorsements, etc, in fact go a little further, but I've not found anything that's free and sounds modern.
I did some rugby videos at a club, using a band we had play for us, for money, on occasion. They were only too pleased to be promoted that way. But they used no original music and the committee were a bit nervous of infringing copyright.

Be very careful because they WILL close your channel and delete any videos you have uploaded with their blanket three strikes and you are out policy, a friend of mine had uploaded over 250 videos over several years only to discover one morning that his account had been deleted (without warning) and all his videos were gone. They don't muck about. There's Free Background Music, which is great as far as it goes, but it is background music. I'd like some lyrics that the video can play to.

There used to be a site on the web a few years ago which closely followed and posted up the number of users being banned and videos being deleted on a daily basis and by whom and it was pretty horrific reading, I think the website was called YouTomb but I can't seem to find it any longer, though there is a writeup on Wikipedia.
The thing to remember is that the only safe way to upload videos and music onto YouTube is when you have recorded it yourself and you own the copyright.

A chap I knew used classical music - out of copyright - but even then he got a video track deleted. He then used software that promised to hide any recognisable features and that seems to work. But I don’t want to sound a goody goody but I have copy copied on a weekly basis and posted on other websites and moan so even I haven’t got the front to do the same to music.
I’m lucky enough to have had a warning, although, oddly enough, they’ve left the audio track on the video. I’ve got a note on the video manager.
They were very abrupt. My own fault though. I did the video in 2002 purely for person enjoyment. I ‘discovered’ it when cleaning a HDD and posted it last year without checking it all the way through.
So that’s one strike.
I’ve tried to make music with some free software. It sounds awful though, just as if it was made by someone who is not very musical. Perhaps I'll persevere.

The composer may have been dead for 75+ years but there are recording rights too.Anyway, is it not worth paying a struggling composer a few beans for decent music rather than insisting on 'free'?
If you want to be professional sign up to MCPS and get a bazillion tons of decent music and pay as you go.

If it was 'a few beans' then fair enough, but in most cases it is not. I've got to balance cost against benefits and if using uncopyrighted material does not adversely affect the returns then that's the way it has to be. It is only background music that I want. Aspiring musicians get something out of it, so a back-scratching exercise is a reasonable outcome.I approached a local music school when I was adding tracks to rugby videos and it wasn't so much them being willing to help, but pushing it. They wanted the graduates' music to be heard and played online. The writers got their products aired, the school got their name mentioned and my club got a nice bit of music in the background of their videos. Everyone wins.
I usually use Jamendo https://www.jamendo.com/?language=en
They even have a catalogue of CC music specifically for use, royalty-free, on videos (little tab, top right).
A personal licence is under a fiver.

Have you had a look at audio network: https://www.audionetwork.com/registration#
They're one of the biggest in fully licensed music, and rates are pretty reasonable. Nearly every production company I know has an account with them. I think when you sign up, you get the use of 10 tracks for free

ETA: I should probably add why.
First what others say, then what I say.
First. They stopped paying composers mechanical copyright fees. So when a piece of music is bought ONLY audio network get paid. Even if the composer paid all the money to get the work recorded. The composer only gets royalty fees IF it's used.
Taking the piss, exploitation etc.
That's what they say.
What I say.
They sell a bunch of music they have 'bought' at a cheap rate - as a job lot - to a TV channel (let's call it Ch4 for example) to use on whatever prog. they want, Then every prog we see uses the same f
king music! (Just watch CH4 for a few days to discover this). So composers get screwed both ends.
But there are enough desperate people to get into the biz to sign up. Of course.
Strike any resemblance to 'photos published are good publicity, so we don't need to pay you?'
Great business model, that will undoubtedly be the ONLY model in the industry in the near future.
Creatives get much less money, corporates get much more money, we get far less original music, and hear the same bloody stuff all the time on TV.
Growl.

I hear their music on everything these days. One of the first things I try and do if Im directing a project, is try and funnel some of the budget towards getting more original music - but then a producer usually chimes in with "but why when we have an audio network account......"

I use soundcloud, you have the option to filter out tracks that are available to use commercially.
I have around 25 videos and no strikes so far. Here is a YT link showing you how to do it - https://youtu.be/rECuUwEYNl4

What would be useful is some way for new artists who don't have recording contracts to put their music forward for use as backing for YouTube videos - that way the video maker gets royalty-free music and the artist gets free advertising.
Yes - but in practice what actually happens is that by the time the 'new artist' has had some free advertising (ie had his work used for nothing) and says to the next client 'But my work is on YouTube now, can I have £50 please?' they will say 'Thanks but we'll find a new artist who will do it for free.'Advertising/publicity? Tchah, what you need is money.
Everybody wants free, even if they have plenty of money. It's an internet disease. Accept that even hobbies cost money. Can I have a free chuck for my lathe because it's only a hobby and I make no money from turning wood? Nope.
This has been posted before, and the artist is not 'new', but it's worth watching: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mj5IV23g-fE

I make money from writing and concomitant roles. I wrote for free for years, even pre internet. It builds skills. When you have copy rejected after offering it for free you know you're missing some skills. I got 'known'. I got my first commission from an editor I supplied free copy to on an irregular basis. Advertising/publicity? Tchah, what you need is money.

Andy Weir, albeit out of my league, gave away The Martian. I have his book on Kindle and I paid nothing for it. The rights were bought by a publishing company a couple of years later and he made money from his writing.
On occasion I still write for free, for instance on my blog, but that's for a purpose. I enjoy writing and I would assume a musician would enjoy writing and playing music. I'm not after a great opus, just some background music for video. If I become successful at video making (unlikely I know) then I would probably look to those who've helped me in the past.
If musicians want to give their material away for free under creative commons then so be it. If no one picks it up then they know they are stuck with the day job.
