Finally got around to buying myself a decent camera, last SLR was a Canon 35mm back in the early 90's. Gone for a Nikon D750 with Nikon AF-S NIKKOR 24-70mm f/2.8G ED. Heading off to the States next week traveling around the National Parks so wanted something to capture the big sky's, deserts and mountain ranges. May also start looking for a 70-200 or 70-300 lens to round things off but that may have to wait until the Wife calms down.

That's a great choice of camera, you will indeed have a great deal of fun with it on your tour round the US, I very nearly bought one myself till I was side-tracked by the Canon 5D3 and managed to order one whilst a few short-term offers appeared.I thought the Nikon D750 was a full frame camera, is there any particular reason you put a AF-S lens on it?
Hey I know about the wife effect, I bought my 5D3 just before Christmas as a present to myself from the wife and had been wandering around with it for several weeks without her noticing because to her it looked the same as any other camera, unfortunately the credit card statement was delivered a few weeks later and she queried the amount which kind of leapt out at her, needless to say she was none too pleased, well actually she went ballistic. Luckily she's now simmered down since viewing a few of the photos I've taken.
Needless to say I've not dared to go out and buy the Tamron 24-70mm lens, or any other lens for that matter, lest I find myself wearing the nights dinner on my head and sleeping with the dog!
AF-s only means the lens has an internal focusing motor and does require an in body af drive for af.
The 24-70 Nikon lens is superb and suits the full frame cameras very nicely!
The 70-200 is expensive and heavy but does give great results. For your trip to the states - I'd be tempted to look at a wide angle lens over a telephoto. The 16-35 is good or the monster 14-24.

Other than my 50mm prime, my 70-200 f2.8 is my least-used lens, but when I do have cause to use it (like at LeMans next week for night shots) it is absolutely superb.
The lens I get the most use from is the 16-35 - had some great results with it. Not so good for Motorsport though....
I quite fancy the 24-70, but I found that I wanted more reach on a walkabout lens, so I'm currently trying a 28-300. Definitely not the last word in speed or quality, but if you work within its limits, it seems to be ok.
I'm lucky in that Wifey doesn't seem to be bothered about my ever-growing collection of stuff in the camera cupboard
