Right. I’ve been mulling this over for the best part of a year now and since I’m going to Spa for the LMES next weekend have finally decided to take the plunge and get myself a digital SLR (nothing like doing things at the last minute!).

I’ve decided to go for the Canon EOS 350D but the question is what lens to go for? I’m primarily going to use it for motor sport so I want something that’s going to be able to give good close-ups from track side but at the same time will be able to get clear shots of fast moving objects.

From my rudimentary knowledge of photography; for close-ups from distance the focal length of the lens is the critical factor (higher the better) and for fast moving objects a lower F number is desirable. Have I got this right (in very simplistic terms)?

Trouble is low F number/high focal length = mucho cash. So what compromise to go for?

Looking at Jessops a couple that caught my eye were a 28-200mm; F3.5/5.6 @ 300 GBP and a 100-300mm; F4.5/5.6 @ 253 GBP.

The 300mm seems the better deal to me because it’s got the extra focal length and is cheaper. But will the ability to go down to F3.5 on the other lens make the difference?

Also what your thoughts on Tokina and Sigma? I’ve never heard of them until now. Are they any good?

Budget is about 1K GBP all in. But for that I want body, lens, flash, spare battery, spare CF card, case, strap and poss an in car charger (if they do one). Doable?
