As a keen photographer myself, I really need to start getting involved in the monthly competitions on here. It got me thinking, would you be interested in some sort of prize each month, and would it encourage you to enter if there was something I could get to give away?

I'm thinking photography books, magazine subscriptions, etc. I don't want to wade in and start changing the way the competition is run, but thought I'd run it by you first to see what a few of you think.

Hi Ben - sounds good to me! If we can leave the format broadly the same as it is now then prizes might encourage a wider entry and generate some publicity for the competitions smile

It sounds good, but for prizes I think ressurecting the challenge would work better. So rather than just going back through your catalogue and choosing the best image, the playing field is levelled by people having to take the photo that month.

I have had a couple of goes at the competition on here but I must say the idea of art being a competitive sport doesn't sit comfortably.

Add to that the inherent problem of there being just one judge who chooses the picture that he or she likes best.

A spot OT here, but that's sort of why I quit art as a subject after GCSEs and didn't continue it to A-levels.

Thanks for the replies all and sorry for the delay in coming back to you. But I've got a book sorted for next month, so lets see if that incentivises more people to get involved!

Agree with both of these - let's leave the format as-is (prior winner setting topic and judging), but the Challenge is also a nice idea (even though I've bugger all time at the moment for photography so would probably rule me out...).

Photography as a competition - in this forum it's up-to-now been a little bit of light, good-natured sport among friends (so-to-speak) - don't think small prizes should change that much.

I will be doing the judging tomorrow so is the decision for November onwards that we go to the 'challenge' format with occasional prizes?

I'm happy with that but not really up to me! smile
