After my dads recent outrageous purchase of a Canon EOS 1D I thought I might try my hand at a bit of photography....

Question is which camera... i'm looking for an SLR-like camera for about £200-£300; keeping in mind that I'll be going to the states later this year and so could afford a more "expensive" camera that will fit in my budget

Cheers

Do you mean a second-hand DSLR or a new compact that's been styled with a lump on the top?

Have a look through the past few weeks - there have been threads from people looking for deleted Canon models. There must be some about if you keep an eye out.

Quite a few of my friends have converged on the Fuji S7000 from different routes. For whatever reasons the features seemed to match what they wanted.

It has a decent optical zoom, idiot modes for when you dont want to think and shutter and aperature priority modes for more manual controls.

In fact its pretty well spec'd.

lol, the thought did cross my mind

Think the Fuji is right at the top of my budget and has "only" 6x zoom - can you get additional lenses for it or is it fixed?

How about these:

Panasonic FZ5
<a href="http://www.dpreview.com/reviews/specs/Panasonic/panasonic_dmcfz5.asp">www.dpreview.com/reviews/specs/Panasonic/panasonic_dmcfz5.asp</a>

Canon Powershot S1 IS:
<a href="http://www.dpreview.com/reviews/specs/Canon/canon_s1is.asp">www.dpreview.com/reviews/specs/Canon/canon_s1is.asp</a>

Or for the same price as the Fuji:
Panasonic FZ20:

Which has a 12x zoom and stability control but has slightly less resolution compared to the fuji

Any ideas which would be the best general use camera but alot of outdoor scenic shots, shots of moving/stationary cars

Its all much of a muchness really. Personally I'd go Canon cause I'm a Canon person.

It really comes down to which one looks nicer and feels nicer in the hand. Wander round round Jessops and have a play.
