The shallow DoF really doesn't work for me on the first picture. I'm not sure why but it gives me a headache!

Agreed on number 3 though

I think it's the out of focus bunch in the close foreground that does it. Distracts the eye from the in focus bunches in teh middle distance.

I think my brain's trying to constantly re-focus on the nearest bunch... but it can't
