Hi all,

Won't be going to the states for a while, so where is the best/cheapest place to get a spare battery for my 20d and some 1gb CF cards ?

Ta muchly,

Ross.

OK - I'll help with some ideas.

I got 2 CF cards on ebay. Only bid for those from private sellers (not the "let us send you something from the other side of the world" jobbie). Got 2 Kingston Elite Pro 1GB for about the same price as I paid for 1 Lexar card new. Mind, they're a bit slower to copy from but just as fast for the D70 buffer rate.

Other places I'd consider are:

1) Check prices using www.kelkoo.co.uk
2) www.ebuyer.co.uk
3) check in the back of this week's AP or other mag for who's claiming to be cheapest.

There have been posts on both these topics recently on this forum, do a quick search and I am sure you will be enlightened.

I usually pick up my CFs in the US, however www.valuemedia.co.uk are damn good.

My batteries, the spares I have for my 20D, I got from eBay. At about £6-£10 each you can't really go wrong, and they seem to last longer than the 511As I have...

Oh yes, and check out the CF database on www.robgalbraith.com to see which are the best CF cards to buy for your 20D - I use Sandisk Ultra II.

I bought a cheap bp511 copy from hong kong £7 delievered use it as back up

got a 1gig CF sandisc ultra 2 off ebay rom states £52 delievered.

ebuyer is good for cards if you don't want to go through ebay. lexar 80x are slower than the sandisc ultra in a 20D.

Ross, it is your prerogative, but there are ultra-reliable memory card sellers on eBay (who I would rate as more reliable and have far better service than eBuyer to be honest) and you stand to save a packet if you go down the Hong Kong route.

There's nothing to be scared off anymore - just pick one of the major sellers (like flashman852, who I've bought from in the region of about ten times without a single issue) with a high feedback rating and pay quickly via PayPal.

Swallow that paranoia and give it a go - once you realise how easy and good it is there is no going back. The prices are simply awesome.

I agree. I bought two 1Gb Sandisk Extreme cards from flashman852 on the 26th April and they both turned up this morning (5th May) in perfect working order.

there is plenty to be wary of when using ebay - but if you go in eyes open and do as suggested then you should be ok.

Still, I don't buy anything from ebay I'm not prepared to lose (i.e. I wouldn't buy anything for more than a tenner as I don't want to lose more than that).

Leap of faith time......2 20d batteries for £17.00 delivered off of ebay seems a decent price to say the least.......I'll be chasing you lot for a rebate if it goes pear shaped !

On to the CF cards now !

Thanks

Heh heh... You'll probably get them in the post, and they'll probably work, but there's a chance they may not work as well as originals (I'm guessing they can't be originals at that price).

Just a quick comparison:

Kingston 1GB Single Layer Compact Flash Card Elite Pro

Ebay (Flashman852) £44 inc p&p
Ebuyer £46.68 inc p&p

Sandisk 1GB Ultra II Compact Flash Card

Ebay (Flashman852) £60.99
Ebuyer £64.48

So there's a couple of quid in it.

Not too worried at that price, they are more as a back up when I can't get to a charger to be honest...

The two that I bought for about £17 for my 20D actually last longer than the Canon originals. And if they only last a year or so, who cares at that price??

Check out www.emartbuy.com - I got a couple of Sandisk Extreme III cards from them recently, and not only were they delivered the next day, but they were also the cheapest I could find

Guys
I am delighted to hear so many good stories about eBay's Mr Flashman852. Unfortunately I have not met with the same success. 1GB CF card never received he told me to be paitent and it would arrive. I have (65 days) and it hasn't. For the first time in nearly 100 transactions I have found myself filing a report to eBay. Even with eBay payment protection it costs £15 and it doesn't cover postage. I'll be £25 out of pocket if I get money back and I have had to buy a card elsewhere.
Beware!

One thing to consider is that flashman852 seems to want to charge £15 postage for a single CF card.
