Hi

I'm about to get my first DSLR after many years with film. Shortlisted the Nikon D70 and Canon 20D!

Any comments, suggestions, words of wisdom on these choices as I really am stuck on this. Both cameras feel great in my hand but obviously 20D a lot more money so is it worth it?

Hi Gary,
You won't know this but the hornets are buzzing
I have the D70, and from received the wisdom the 20D is 'better', but costs more, so that's what you'd expect. I guess you don't have any lenses that might sway the choice, so perhaps be guided by total budget. If you choose the D70 (actually the revamped D70s is coming out soon) it comes with a very good 18-70 lens and you'll have some money left to buy other decent lenses, flash etc. If you choose the 20D, you won't have that extra to play with.

As you've already played with both, maybe you need to think of what you plan to use the camera for, and which one has the best ability to do it. Features/benefits etc. Although of course if you buy the Canon you won't be able to join the famous 'D70 Owner's Clud'

I have been to Jessops to test etc etc and don't have any existing Nikon or Canon fit lenses so clean sheet. I think it is the extra £300/£400 that concerns me BUT have heard that you have to work a lot harder with the D70 to get great results....whatever that means!!!

Not sure about having to work hard with a D70... It's not something I've heard!

Other than that I would second Simpo's comments - the 20D is more expensive so uses more of your budget that could be spent on lenses filters bags monopods tripods more lenses more filters etc etc etc.

consider the 350D. 20D blows the D70 out the water but costs more

Weeeelll - I think that practically speaking, at that level the person behind the camera is the major factor.

it goes some way yes but the 20D has ISO 100 and is significantly less noisey at higher ISO levels, has a faster fps, more mp, better built, easyer to use ergonimically and is not a nikon

20D has better grip and all the buttons in the right place.

D2X has an improved grip though. nikon muct have reversed engineered the canon one lol

I have a 20D and it is fine for me at the moment, certainly better than my current range of lenses will allow (using a Canon 75-300 EF and I think that is limiting me at the moment).

It is certianly a lot better than the 300D I had before it and well worth the extra in my book.

I think we're getting distracted. It's perfectly obvious that people who bought Nikons did so because that's what they preferred, and people who bought Canons did so because that's what they preferred.

Try to ignore partisan views and concentrate on what best fits your bill - not someone else's - for your budget.

actually I think the grip on the D2x is worse than on the D1x...

I've used Nikons for quite a few years, but over the last year I've used Canons a lot more, and a month ago I switchad over to Canon completely.

I love my new camera, but I have to say the Nikon is more intutive to use both in terms of the physical controls and to a larger degree the menus for all te different functions.

Having said that I am on the lookout for a 20D so if anyone knows of a decent one for sale...

of course but you wouldn't really say the same thing on a porsche vs. ferrari thread or somthing like that...

in this case I think the valid point has already been made that the 20D is a more expensive and "better" camera than the D70, and out of those two I would go for the 20D every time.

In general I think that at the moment Canons have better image quality whereas Nikons are slightly nicer to use (with some notable exceptions - the 1dsII has a couple of marvelous features that would seriously improve the d2x). But they all produce very good pics, so go and have a play and see which you prefer in your hands.

For what it's worth, I feel Canon make better lenses, but Nikon are making good strides back on this, so again not a lot of difference.

I think that it's Nikon the make the better lenses...

....but anyway, I still maintain my own stupid mantra here.... go and handle, feel, caress you weapon of choice. My stupidly simple philosophy includes the "if it don't feel right you ain't gonna use it" philosophy
