HP photosmart 850 flashing at me!

I have borrowed my dads camera and as soon as i turn it on the screen and the red light on the front start flashing slowly and any button presses are totally ignored.

It even keeps flashing after i have turned the camera off so i have to remove the batteries. I thought originally that it might be because there was no media card in it but i have fixed that and it is still happening :(

There is no mention of this problem in the manual, does anyone have any ideas what's up?

Sounds like a flat battery? Is it fully charged?

If not that, then sounds like one of either the battery or memory card cover is open?

Batteries are freshly charged and the media card has been removed / reinserted etc and the flashing happens whether or not the card is inserted or the door is open or closed.

I just know I am going to be blamed for this even though it has done this since i borrowed it a few days ago...
