And it seems I'm not the only one, there are forums full of people with cameras that no longer work.

The CF Access lamp just flashes and no menus or displays or shutter release works, seems to be quite common on cameras built before Sept 04.

Should've gone for canon!

Goodness me. Mine's still OK.

Firmware crash? What's wrong?!

Well it would certainly be interesting to hear more info on your problem. I thought it was the D2X having all the teething troubles.

Be interesting to learn N UK's response to your problem, too.

Thanks for the heads up!

I've heard of one or two failures (which in percentage terms must be miniscule) are you able to quantify "quite common" better?

I cannot see this from behind our proxy but pretty sure it is the one I looked at from home, there are links from it to other forums where more people have the issues, the problem is an internal connector, the problem seems to happen a lot in month 13 and the fix is a new board.

Will be calling Nikon today.

It's caused by a small timer which fries the circuit board at Warranty Expiry + 1. Most electronic goods have this.

My D70 is pre-Sep 04 but working OK so far.

A friend of mine had his D70 fail at 11 months, nikon replaced the Shutter unit, Base Plate Unit, Flash PCB, SB Unit (cable thingy to Flash PCB) & the Aperture Control and it took them 8 weeks to get it back to him, he has since bought a D100 and will use the D70 as a backup. It's interesting to note that his and 2 other D70's that I know of have had their Aperture Control replaced. As has been already said these failures probably represent a small percentage of overall sales but forums tend to overflow with people who have problems and you don't see too many posts from people just to say their camera is working fine

Cheers
