Great photos, ED, but please wash the cars next time!

Someone seems to have put a big (c) on the front of your lens there.

Apart from that, very clear and sharp pics, could do with a little more variation though...

Yup, agree with that, although the problem is the lack of decent viewing spots there - most have catch fencing obstructing your view.

I cannot get past the "C" - do you really need to obliterate the image AND have the text?

Surely the text is enough to protect your commercial interest?

Cool pics mate!!!

I really need to get a 300mm+ lens for next year. Longest I had with me was 70mm which was sh*te for most of the circuit.

Out of curiosity what ISO speed, lens type, etc?

Very nice pictures. The Astons look great!

Cracking pics indeed Top Stuff.

Shutter speed (just one or two examples) would be very helpful to me

To me they look like pics from a 100-400 L with the shutter speed for the panning shots around 1/160th and the cornering shots about 1/640th or 1/800th

Thanks for the comments

Sorry about the "C" - I'm still playing around with different ways of marking my images, and just have a batch job that does it all at the click of a button, but I didn't think it detracted from the image too much.

I'll post up shutter/aperture details this evening when I get home, but other details of the shots are:

Head-on corner shots were taken on the outside of Tetre Rouge just after the Dunlop Bridge curves, where you can get a view without any fencing. Lens was a Canon 300mm f2.8 L with 2x converter (giving 600mm f5.6). Camera was a Canon 1Ds Mk II.

Side profile shots were taken at the same corner, but on the opposite side of the track (you need to walk all the way round past the car park). If you stand at the top right of the spectator area, you again get a clear view over the fencing, although it helps if there aren't many people there as they can get in the way. Lens was the 300mm on it's own, and it was a struggle to get the cars to fit in the frame - the shots above aren't cropped at all, so you can imagine the number of photos I took of 3/4 of car

Thankfully using digital I could preview the shot and was able to keep taking them until I got a few that I was happy with.

Ed,
I'm considering getting the 300mm f2.8. It's a bit of a commitment, so I need to know are you happy with it?

It's a fantastic lens, although it's bd heavy!

I was carrying it around in a backpack along with a 70-200 f2.8 and 24-70 f2.8 plus the body, tripod and monopod and all-in it came to about 15kg which isn't much fun in 35+ degree heat!

Apart from that though, it is great - 300mm @ f2.8 is nice, but stick a 1.4x TC on it and you get a useful 420mm @ f4 and with the 2x TC you get 600mm @ f5.6, which is very handy as you still retain AF and get good shutter speeds.

It's not perfect at 600mm, as the 2xTC loses a bit of sharpness, but it's a lot cheaper and easier to carry than the 500/600mm lenses!

Thanks. That will help a lot as far as pointing me in the right direction. I have a race to go to end of July (Rolex Sportscar Series at Barber Raceway in Alabama). I will be in the pits (actually, I will be "managing" the Finlay Motorsports Daytona Prototype - long story) and shall be bringing the Canon for it's first trial run. I will be using your settings as a "cheat sheet"

...can I just clarify that a Royal Marine, who had spent time in the SAS and had special weight-lifting experience, would have struggled picking up this backpack!!! ...and it wasn't exactly a pleasantly mild week-end!!!

I can recommend the Sigma 120-300 F2.8. Ok, no IS but very sharp and being zoom you don't have to change lenses so often. £1700 and 2.6KG.

You get my mail about Friday Ed?
