Popped up on my twitter feed, what’s the device he’s holding and what does the wheel do that he turns as soon as the shot starts?

Looks like a full 3 channel FIZ unit (Focus, Iris, Zoom). - I wouldn't want to be a focus puller on a film set, probably the most stressful job on set. Leo there can fluff his lines 10 times and its fine, but if a focus puller fluffs focus on a good take, the director will give them the absolute death stare!

Does that mean the cameraman doesn’t need to worry at all about focusing? He’s just responsible for having the subject in the frame?

There's more to it than that but essentially yes. Hence the position 'focus puller'.

focus puller is the technical term for that crew member.

They can also now be rigged up for virtual production which is quite impressive if anyone here works in post. No idea why I put that last bit?
