A Canon question
Discussion
A friend with a Canon AE-1 wants to get a DSLR but has a max budget of £400. I suggested a clearance/secondhand 300D and that it would probably work with his old lenses as an interim measure, until he can get newer AF ones.
His current lenses, dating from 1983-4, are:
Canon FD 50mm f1.4
Canon FD 28mm f2.8
Tamron 80-200mm f4.5 with adapter to Canon, I suspect an Adaptall 2 mount (this is manual even on the AE-1, so I'm not expecting much)
There's also a Canon Speedlight 199A flash.
Can a PH Canon expert tell me if these will work OK with a 300D body? Obviously he won't have AF, but what about metering? Any other drawbacks?
Thanks :)

Well I don't think they will fit. Full stop.
That's the reason I moved to N from C in the mid '90s - couldn't add new bodies to the FD lenses I had
Oh and you can fit a Tamron with Adaptall mount onto a Nikon digital
but no metering on the D70
still the histogram makes it possible to use in the field

The flash gun will be triggered by the digital camera but that'd be all, there wouldn't be any TTL measurement.
Only the EOS lenses will connect to Canon's digital cameras directly. You can get a body aadaptor for FD to EOS connectivity, they're about £50 plus postage from Speed Graphic. He will lose metering connectivity as well as autofocus, though as that particular adaptor is quite pricy maybe it will still automatically stop down ? I'd give them a call to find out more, 0845-330-5530. Its part no. is KDBACAFFD.
Don't forget that there'd still be the multiplication factor for the lenses to take into account so he'd lose wideangle capability with that lens collection. Think he'd be best off looking for a completely new kit to be honest. More initial outlay but probably worth it for the convenience.
Has he considered the Pro-1 as well as the 300D ? 28-200 zoom range, L series lens, 8 megapixels and only £420 from 7dayshop. There's other prosumer cameras too, or have you just had the idea of talking him into joining the Clud as he's going to be replacing all his kit anyway...

Thanks chaps. So you mean the bayonet is actually different from AE-1 to 300D?
The Clud is for Nikon members only!
He'd seen a Konica Minolta prosumer 8Mp jobbie but as he's had an SLR before and wants the control/flexibility, that's why I steered him towards a DSLR, if at all possible. And Canon make the cheapest ones

Guy I work with has an Olympus E-300, can be had from the far east on ebay for a shade over 400.
Not a huge slection of glass but it's all good stuff and because it's 4/3s, Sigma are now making fits for it too.
With a 2x crop factor, if you got an inexpensive 40-150, along with the kit lens you'd be covered for an effective 28-300mm.
Seems to produce nice pics.
And to go with my current dust related ramblings, it has an anti ststic dust off thing too.

With all my waffle I'd lost my meaning, thought you'd read it and say to yourself, "This Canon stuff is too confusing, and is only backwards-compatible for 15 years or so, better to get him in to something with a longer potential life span such as a D70."
I'd advise him to avoid the Konica. Although it should be good there have been plenty of issues with them producing fuzzy shots including a friend of mine who has just got rid of hers. I've got my eye on the Panasonic FZ5 but wish they did a 7-8Megapixel version to make the most of the Leica lens.

Once they do bring out a few more pixels (maybe 10-12???) that really would/should be a winner!!!
Ona chip the size of a fingernail? No thanks!
....or is my logic flawed?

Ah - fair point... you'd have low signal to noise to deal with as well as a less sensitive starting point,
At some point, as you get smaller, quantum mechanics will take over, too
Oooooo, my head's starting to hurt - too much thinking for a "day of rest", and not enough lubricatory grape-juice-fermented-liquid-refreshment!
