I saw that too. I don't think you don't actually need the little plastic lug; the important thing is that to work, the aperture must be set to the smallest setting. The lug just stops it moving unintentionally.

It's a very good lens and significantly faster than zooms (which is why I kept mine) and IIRC they're worth about £80 mint. So if you fancy a cheapie, go for it.

Edited to say - on closer inspection it's not the same as mine and is not 'D'...

Well - that was what I was thinking.

Can't help worrying that I'm missing something. It's obviously an early-ish AF, but optically they've a brilliant reputation

I suppose you could ask him for the year and serial number, then see if it would be OK on a D70?

Oh. I have no doubt that technically it should fit and meter and stop down. Obviously it won't "D-meter" or iTTL - meter to the camera's ability. I just wonder about its limitations if it's broke!

I've just tried mine on smallest aperture but with the lug disengaged, and it works fine.

You could always buy it, and if you don't like it, re-sell it?

Idea poached from other threads... If all else fails can you bung it on the body backwards with an adaptor and use it as a cheap macro lens ?
