Hi all,

OK - right, I've got the webspace, URL etc. but I wondered what people used to do their websites too "show off" their pictures.

I have used the Web Generator in Photoshop but it's a bit average for me (I'm fussy, not that the quality of my pics is too good! ;))

Particularly nomoregravy and GetCarter's sites I like.

Technically savvy so do your worst! ;) but if there are good looking templates out there that I could amend - that'd be cool.

Cheers in advance,
Phil.

I use a host (a PHer in fact) who kindly installed Gallery for me. It's perfect for my needs:

www.davidhambly.co.uk

Everything after the splash page is software, and jolly good it is too.

Depends on how often you need to make updates and how hassle free you would like it.

The Best met is to Use Macromedia's Flash MX as a digital photo album.

The .SWF file holds the layout and an external XML file has the image filenames and captions. The images reside in two sub -directories on your server.

/small and /images for thumbnails and images respectively.

So when you need to remove an image you just delete it from both folders and the line in the xml file.

Alternatively , you could just have a folder for images and any images you have in there will show up in the flash movie.

If you need a caption you could always add it to the image (as well as a copyright notice).

I've made my own from scratch...

www.grant.gb.com/

...but it's a pain to update and probably two slow for dial up users. I'll probably end up moving to a standard package. Some of the photos aren't the greatest so I'll want to replace them with better ones as I go along, this will take too long at the minute. I just wanted to give it a unique look.

Hey grant, I made my own from scratch, then used "Jalbum" to create a template using my code. I can then give Jalbum a bunch of pics and it generates it in my own format.

My vote would go for Jalbum, as long as you know a little bit of HTML - you can tweak the templates, add in your own menus/logos etc, and it's very easy to then update galleries as and when you need to.

Sorry nick, read the grant bit in your www address and put 2+2 together, ended up with 96.

Here's a sample gallery

I write the "index" page by hand though - here

It depends on what you want, you can get away with using something like JAlbum, Gallery etc, but they are all static and regardless of how you change them, you'll never get something like NoMoreGravies.

On the other hand you have something my site which uses a PHP/mySQL solution. The original code was cobbled together and is a hideous mess, but I've just completed the re-writing of the gallery software and am now working on getting it working with CSS etc...

Essentially what I'm saying is for ultimate control you can't beat writing it for yourself, or working with someone who knows what they are doing!

I am another Gallery user and find it fits in with my needs, on my main site www.ianhardy.net I now have 18,000+ photos and on my proof gallery www.ianhardyphotography.co.uk I have just installed a shopping cart combined with Gallery which I am testing before I roll it out on my main site. Gallery is now available with different skins included and if you wish you can write your own, it is also quite customisable (is that a word! ) however far you want to take it, there is also a great support forum where you can get help.

Loose the closing brackets and your links will work.

David - I have just installed Gallery 1.5 for a client which he seems more impressed with than previous versions, let me know if you want an upgrade.

1.5 is fab but I think 2 is a bit over the top, they've almost made it a complete CMS in itself...

I made my own in FrontPage: www.blokewithacamera.co.uk. I'm not claiming any prizes but it does the job. However I'm thinking that Gallery could save me a lot of work and make updating easier... how much control do you have?

I use coppermine for www.587racing.com/gallery/ which does the job quite nicely... I used to use gallery, but buggered it up whilst halfway thru attempting to do some thing and ended up uninstalling it.. then whilst tinkering, found coppermine and rather liked it...

Each to their own tho..

Complete control with Gallery.

With my previous stuff, I hacked around at the templates and got it to fit in with the rest of my layout, with 1.5, it's a piece of cake and there are loads of people designing skins for it.

Check out the examples on the webpage http://gallery.menalto.com

Aha, you can get for nothing

I downloaded the last of these, but do I need the others? It's almost as baffling as Symantec!

Download gallery-1.5-php5_upgrade_error.diff 953
Download gallery-1.5.tar.gz 2341592 42490 Any .gz
Download gallery-1.5.zip 2678289 73011 Any .zip

Hang on, I've just unzipped it and there's no .exe file. WTF?

RTFM...

It's all web based, you have to upload the files to your web server and run the various setup stuff.
Takes a good half hour to set all the options, so set some time aside for it.
