new d70 help please

Back to the manual!
The number on the display when the camera is off is the estimated shots remaning. See it change as you vary the quality settings using the rear dial:
RAW + JPG Basic
RAW
JPG Large
JPG Fine
JPG Basic
Those deal with the amount of compression; in addition with JPG you can change the *image* size in pixels using the front dial:
Large
Medium
Small
So the most memory-consuming option, RAW + JPG Basic, will give you 87 shots, while JPG Basic Small will give you 3,800!
One point - the D70 is very conservative in its estimate; in real life you will get significantly more shots than it says. For example, I use JPG Large Fine which gives an average file size of about 2.8Mb. Divide that into 1Gb and you get 357 shots - many more than 293 it says.

I have a 2Gb card and I get about 400-500 RAW shots on it... so around 200-250 maybe?
I depends on the format you shoot of course. JPG small etc... could be up to 1000's!
I seem to remember reading that the D70 gets its "shots left" value based on the size of the largest file saved (or a factory default when the card is empty) and dividing the space remaining by that. I believe this has been changed to use an average size with the firmware update.
