Woke up this morning and took a last minute decision to go to Thorney Island Hot Rod Show. Glad I did, what a great show! Bit burnt now though. Anyhoo here a few snaps…

Liked this one best. At first it looks like there's some sort of artistic de-focusing (is that a word?) done to it, then you realize that the left side is in focus, and then the whole picture comes together. Odd-looking sky also adds to it.

Shallow depth of field (ie big aperture) - the original way of getting things out of focus before they invented digital and Photoshop!
My first thought on the colour cast was '1960's transparencies' - is it natural or a sepia filter?

Is it me or do these pictures have a kind of "clay model" feel to them - it's almost as if I'm convinced I'm looking at miniatures as opposed to real people and real cars!

I'm with Simpo - the colour cast really gives them the look of 20yr old scanned photographs.

Product of a filter or photoshop? Or just an incredibly hot day

That's exactly the look I was going for I wanted to give them that "Summer of '76" look, it's all about nostalgia these days

I used a polarising filter all day then added the yellow tint in photoshop to give them a faded look

Shnozz are you as burnt as me I wonder!

Can someone tell me what effect the Polarising filter has, and can I replicate this using PS?

Some good stuff here about polarisers:

www.geocities.com/cokinfiltersystem/polarizer.htm

Scroll down the link for pics showing the difference with/without.

I find them most useful for reducing/removing reflections on glass or water.

You can't add what isn't there, but I suppose a rough 'effect' would be to lower brightness and increase contrast and saturation. Have a play and see what works.

Thanks both,

I like the look and feel of these shots, as has been said before it's slightly unreal and certainly old looking. I was wondering what part the filter played in the result as I'm using a compact so many of these options aren't available to me.

I'll read what's in the link and have a play in PS.

Cheers

Hi there.....I'm not a contributer to the (photo) Forum....but saw your comment as I was looking thru'.
I happened to pick up a Jessops catalogue yesterday and there's a page on Cokin filters and you're right, there is a set up that screws into the tripod socket...Filterfast G350 @ £31.99....kit includes the Shoe Filter Holder, star 4 filter, sunset filter, and brochure.,
Hope this is of use to you

I was just following simpos instructions as an example. I have no idea what purple fringing is?

The purple bits on the fringes (edges) of shapes/lines!

Brilliant Thorney photos. Summed up the day pretty well too. Im surprised you didn't manage to photograph my car. In fact I can guarantee that of all the cars there mine was the least photographed! (ie, not at all!).

Any idea what that red car is in Shnozz's post?
Saw it parked up opposite our camp on the strip on Sat but then couldn't find it again on Sunday.

Oh bollox. WHat I meant to say was:
Wicked, in'it. L8r.
